Your Opportunity:
Alberta Health Services (AHS) seeks a dynamic Lead for Surveillance and Epidemiology Team to strengthen communicable disease prevention through data-driven strategies within the Public Health Surveillance & Informatics (PHSI) division. This key leadership role within PHSI reports to the Director, PHSI, and requires extensive collaboration with various stakeholders. This is an ideal opportunity for professionals passionate about enhancing public health through ongoing surveillance, rapid response, and data-informed decision-making, ultimately protecting population health across Alberta. The Surveillance & Epidemiology Lead plays a pivotal role within Alberta’s public health infrastructure, serving as a subject matter expert in the analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data related to infectious diseases. This position is central to identifying disease patterns, monitoring emerging public health threats, and guiding timely, evidence-informed interventions that protect population health. Reporting to the Director of Public Health Surveillance & Informatics, the Lead works closely with the Lead for Data Management and Quality Assurance to ensure data integrity, consistency, and alignment across multiple surveillance and epidemiology areas of responsibility. This collaboration helps maintain a cohesive and responsive surveillance ecosystem that supports public health decision-making. The Lead provides strategic oversight and technical guidance to a team of epidemiologists and data analysts, supporting their work in producing high-quality surveillance reports, outbreak summaries, and responses to data requests. This includes fostering cross-disease coordination and methodological standardization.
Description:
Provide strategic leadership in the design, implementation, and evaluation of infectious disease surveillance systems across Alberta. Manage and mentor a team of epidemiologists and analysts, overseeing disease-specific surveillance areas including STBBIs, enteric illnesses, tuberculosis, respiratory viruses, and immunization. Lead the development and maintenance of surveillance protocols, ensuring alignment with provincial and national standards and consistency across programs. Direct literature reviews and environmental scans to identify emerging health threats and inform adaptive, evidence-based surveillance strategies. Oversee the production and dissemination of technical reports, surveillance dashboards, outbreak summaries, and stakeholder-specific presentations for AHS leadership and Alberta Health. Provide advanced analysis and interpretation of complex, multi-source data sets, including laboratory data, clinical records, and public health information systems. Champion high-quality epidemiological practices through mentorship, peer review, and the implementation of quality assurance and capacity-building initiatives. Collaborate with internal and external partners—including Alberta Health, academic institutions, and other provincial programs—to coordinate surveillance efforts and exchange best practices. Lead or support outbreak investigations by applying rigorous data collection methods, statistical analysis, and real-time reporting frameworks. Contribute to the development and refinement of performance indicators and evaluation frameworks to ensure continuous improvement of surveillance systems. Serve as a key advisor on strategic epidemiological matters, supporting timely, data-informed decisions in response to ongoing and emerging public health priorities.
