This position is responsible and accountable for providing the direction, team leadership and organization over the activities of Data Collection staff in support of the vision, mission and business plan of HIM for Edmonton zone. This position also plays a key leadership role in the transformation and execution of technology enabled business processes or e-HIM®, transitioning from site and zone-based practices to standardized workflows within Connect Care and other 3rd party systems across Alberta Health Services (AHS). This position provides supervision to Clinical Coding Specialists across the Edmonton zone. The Supervisor, Data Collection is responsible for the following: Supervision of Data Collection staff by leading and guiding the staff to ensure quality and timely services, working effectively and cooperatively as a high performing team in a single provincial work queue. Recruitment, selection, new staff orientation, training and performance management and offboarding for clinical coding specialists within Edmonton Zone and at a provincial level as required. Completes audits of coded and abstracted data to ensure accuracy, compliance and completeness of coded data in accordance with The Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI), Primary and Preventative Health Services (PPHS) and AHS policies. Operational supervision with a goal of maximizing throughput by streamlining and transforming current workflow practices to align with the provincial service delivery model, applying strong management skills to meet local and provincial scheduling and work requirements. Cultivation of an e-HIM culture for the Data Collection team.

Successful completion of a Health Information Management program certified by the Canadian College of Health Information Management and an active certification credential with the Canadian Health Information Management Association or University Degree or Diploma in Human Resources or equivalent in education & experience. A minimum of 3 years in a management/supervisor capacity ideally in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity. A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Experience in working with collective bargaining agreements and unionized environment. Proficient communication skills, both formal and informal – written and verbal. Analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills. Effective communicator with strong organizational skills, client focused orientation and commitment to providing quality services. Effective leadership abilities combined with a strong commitment to operating within a team environment and the ability to motivate and inspire others to achieve common goals. Demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others. Ability to manage human, financial and physical resources within an operating environment. Proven ability to foster partnerships and to achieve organizational goals within an organization and ideally managing within a unionized sector.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in electronic data collection including electronic coding and abstracting and submissions to CIHI. Experience or knowledge of health care organizations including Data Collection. Proficient communication skills, both formal and informal – written and verbal.
