Your Opportunity:
The Senior Scientist, Emergency Health Services (EHS Alberta) provides strategic scientific leadership to advance research, innovation, program evaluation, and knowledge translation across the EHS Alberta system and the profession of paramedicine. Reporting to the Program Chief, Evidence and Innovation, and working closely with the Medical Director, Evidence and Innovation and Training, the Senior Scientist develops research objectives that address key organizational priorities and complex system challenges, designs and implements leading-edge research and evaluation methodologies, and applies evidence-informed practices to translate published research into meaningful action. The role provides expert counsel and decision support on strategic direction, service plan objectives, and clinical and operational initiatives that support innovation and continuous improvement within EHS Alberta, the broader Alberta healthcare system, and the evolving field of paramedicine. The Senior Scientist also leads organizational research review processes, evaluates proposed studies involving EHS Alberta, aligns research resources with organizational priorities, and ensures activities are conducted in accordance with established budgetary and financial management processes.
Description:
The Senior Scientist is accountable for the successful, fiscally responsible delivery of complex, high-profile, and strategically significant research and program evaluation projects. This includes ensuring alignment with organizational goals and service plan objectives, maintaining accountability to research ethics boards and funding agencies, and overseeing all operational aspects of research and knowledge translation projects, including risk management, issue resolution, staffing, and stakeholder engagement. The Senior Scientist recruits, mentors, supervises, and, where required, performance manages research associates, paramedics, students, support staff, and members of the Knowledge Creation team, fostering a culture of scientific excellence and collaboration that strengthens the professionalization of paramedicine. As a recognized leader within the scientific and paramedic communities, the Senior Scientist cultivates and leads provincial, national, and international research partnerships, funding opportunities, scholarly activities, symposia, conferences, and other initiatives that advance EHS Alberta's research enterprise and enhance the influence and impact of paramedicine on the provincial, national, and global stage. Please note, this position will expect occasional travel provincially, nationally and internationally along with some weekend and holiday work as required.

Minimum five years’ full-time research experience. Master’s degree in health services research, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, or medical science. Demonstrated success in obtaining research funding, and creating, leading, publishing and translating to action complex research studies. Skills in quantitative analysis (descriptive, multivariable, etc.), or qualitative analysis (content, narrative, grounded theory, etc.). Extensive and refined skills in verbal and written communication. Knowledge of paramedicine performance measures and system measures of success.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Minimum five years clinical experience as a Primary or Advanced Care/Critical Care Paramedic with a history of providing care in a variety of geographic or functional areas of paramedicine. Mixed methods research experience, which includes knowledge and experience in multivariable analysis techniques such as logistic and linear regression, including the use of Directed Acyclic Graphs and other techniques to reflect the dynamic, complex and uncontrolled environment in which paramedicine is typically conducted, along with excellent understanding of the potential for confounding, modification, and collision. Knowledge of qualitative techniques and experience in analyzing data from focus groups and interviews.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in health services research, epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, or medical science. Primary or Advanced Care/Critical Care Paramedic diploma or degree with active registration in a professional college.
