We have an exciting opportunity for a Machine Learning (ML) Developer to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of cancer care in Alberta through data-driven insights. At Cancer Care Alberta (CCA), our goal is to be a leader in cancer diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and palliative care, all on a foundation of world-class analytics. Situated within Cancer Advanced Analytics, Cancer Research & Analytics, Precision Analytics is a multidisciplinary team of passionate experts in ML, epidemiology, and biostatistics, who are dedicated to advancing healthcare through data. We are committed to expanding our capacity to apply advanced analytics to high-priority projects, with the ultimate aim of ensuring timely access to care for our patients. You will work collaboratively within a dynamic team, applying your advanced knowledge of ML methodology to develop solutions that address the needs of CCA. Your work will translate complex healthcare challenges into actionable analytic solutions, making a tangible impact on patients' lives.

Description:

As a ML Developer at Cancer Care Alberta, you will be a crucial member of the Precision Analytics team, working under the guidance of the Program Lead. You will contribute to large-scale applied ML projects that address critical issues in cancer care. Your work will ultimately generate evidence and tools for more efficient operational planning, ensuring that cancer patients have timely access to care at Cancer Care Alberta. You will work with a high degree of independence, and in concert with the Program Lead, to design and implement the ML components of Precision Analytics projects. In collaboration with other scientists on the team, the ML Developer interprets stakeholder needs, assesses requirements, and plans and develops analytic tools that address those needs. They take responsibility for deploying models into production, ensuring scalability and real-time capabilities, while implementing robust monitoring and maintenance practices. They develop and uphold internal technical processes and tooling. As part of our commitment to continuous growth, the ML Developer stays up to date with the latest advancements in ML, integrating cutting-edge technologies and best practices into our work. This is a 1-year position (hybrid, pending internal policy changes) with possibility of extension.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, statistics, or a related field 3-5 years experience in applied AI/ML projects. Expertise in ML and data mining concepts and techniques. Proficiency in Python (Pandas, SciKit, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and similar packages).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Proficiency in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong project management skills and demonstrated mentorship ability. Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Commitment to ethical and compliant ML practices. Demonstrated ability to foster relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. Must abide by the highest standards of confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in computer science, computer engineering, statistics, or a related field 2 years experience leading applied AI/ML projects. Understanding of Canadian health systems. Experience working with health system data (administrative and clinical). Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Visio and Access) and the ability to becoe proficient with new software packages.
