Your Opportunity:
Emergency Health Services (EHS) is recruiting for the Chief, People & Practice Excellence. Reporting to the Managing Director and Chief of EHS, you lead the development and implementation of clinical governance and workforce strategies, programs, and initiatives. In this key leadership position, you ensure the overall efficacy of EHS through the maintenance of good working relationships with the provincial government. Accountable for ~100 FTE, you provide vision, executive leadership, and management to the delivery of accessible, sustainable and integrated clinical, wellness, and learning programs. Responsible for the organization’s operational performance of clinical programs, you build and lead high-level operational leadership committed to fulfilling the vision of EHS. You possess excellent communication skills and political astuteness that enable positive relationships with local, provincial, and national representatives and stakeholders, including government departments and officials. This position’s location within Alberta is negotiable and may be eligible for a remote/hybrid work arrangement. Emergency Health Services (EHS) – Alberta manages all aspects of the emergency health services system in the province. Every year, almost 5000 EHS-Alberta professionals support over 750,000 emergency and transfer calls, both on the ground and in the air. From the emergency communications officers who answer the phone and assess calls, to the front-line paramedics who respond to help, EHS-Alberta works together to make sure Albertans get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
Description:
The Chief, People and Practice Excellence is responsible for clinical governance, patient safety, learning and development, and workforce support for Emergency Health Services. This position ensures that clinical programs adhere to evidence-based standards and are aligned to the strategic direction of EHS, Acute Care Alberta and Ministry of Hospital and Surgical Health Services policy direction. The role provides strategic recommendations and direction to the Managing Director and other executive leaders on organization and clinical governance and programs planning, risk and compliance, and performance. The role leads workforce focused roles in attraction, recruitment, orientation, mentorship, wellness, and development, in conjunction with other internal and external departments. The role establishes and maintains positive relationships with local and provincial representatives and stakeholders, including government departments and officials and academic institutions, to provide organizational leadership and oversight to clinical governance and programs. The Chief is further accountable for clinical governance and programs performance and manages capacity and resources. It fosters a culture of continuous learning and improvement and a safe, inclusive, and high-performing workplace that prioritizes employee engagement, leadership development, and organizational culture.

The successful candidate possesses a Master’s degree in public safety, healthcare profession, healthcare management or business administration. Minimum of ten years’ senior management experience in emergency medical services, public safety or healthcare operations is required. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
Additional Required Qualifications:
The successful candidate possesses demonstrated leadership abilities, including comfort with decision-making and exercising sound judgement, as well as an ability to develop organization strategy and planning. Additionally, the individual possesses a demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives and manage change to achieve positive results. This position requires an ability to influence, negotiate, and mediate resolutions to complex situations, and effective interpersonal and public relations skills to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences, and foster partnerships to achieve organizational goals. You demonstrate a track record of modelling and encouraging innovation and creativity as well as and a proven record of engaging in ethical conduct.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certified Paramedic or prior paramedic experience with professional health association membership. Experience in quality improvement, patient safety, and accreditation at organizational or system levels. Proven ability to integrate research into clinical practice, lead interdisciplinary teams, and apply evidence-based quality assurance. Experience supporting frontline staff and leading workforce initiatives including recruitment, onboarding, mentorship, wellness, and professional development.
