The Calgary Genetics & Genomics/Molecular Pathology (GGMP) team has an exciting opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Technologist I (MLTI) position supporting the new Genome Core facility at the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre. The GGMP team, as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of constitutional and acquired conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic and molecular pathology services for the province of Alberta. As part of the GGMP team, the MLT I will perform a variety of manual and automated procedures to produce accurate and timely results in Molecular laboratories. Specialized techniques include nucleic acid quantification, sequencing, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and NGS. You will run and maintain sequencing and related equipment, generate and analyze data, monitor quality standards, participate in test method evaluation and troubleshooting, and write standard operating procedures. This MLTI position will also involve rotations in the Molecular Pathology laboratories and may also support Genetic & Genomics laboratories and/or research studies at the Arthur Child. Additional techniques may include preparation of constitutional or cancer samples, nucleic acid extraction, real-time PCR, allelic discrimination, and fragment analysis. The successful candidate is committed to providing quality patient care and is able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment to ensure accurate and timely results.

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) I, you will be responsible for the daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples within the laboratory department. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures in the processing of specimens used in diagnosis, treatment and research.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Must have technical knowledge of a variety of molecular techniques, methodologies, instrumentation and software. Proven critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, planning, and decision making skills. Proven effective time management and strong organizational skills are required. Proven communication and interpersonal skills that enable you to build and maintain relationships, facilitate teamwork, resolve conflict, and manage change. Demonstrated ability to deal with conflicting and changing priorities, deadlines, and duties. English fluency with exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of recent experience with a variety of molecular biology techniques. Experience with a variety of molecular analyses in a diagnostic molecular laboratory. Bachelor of Science or equivalent with undergraduate courses in molecular biology would be preferred. Two years of experience with NGS processing and/or analysis. Experience supporting test method evaluations. Experience writing laboratory documents and procedures. Coding or bioinformatic experiences would be an asset.
