The UAH and Stollery Children’s Emergency Department is a busy tertiary care level I emergency department and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This large tertiary Trauma Centre provides opportunities in a broad base of emergency nursing from Pediatrics to Trauma Care. The Unit Manager (UM) will report to and assist the Patient Care Manager in ensuring the provision of high quality and safe patient care on the nursing unit. Description:
As a key member of the leadership team, the Unit Manager – Emergency Department works closely with the Patient Care Manager and the multidisciplinary team to foster a collaborative environment and support the implementation of new initiatives. The Unit Manager coordinates clinical activities on the unit, providing day to day direction to staff, overseeing daily staff assignments, conducting unit rounds, managing staff scheduling, and facilitating effective multidisciplinary communication. The role includes identifying and addressing patient and staff concerns, actively participating in the discharge planning process, and ensuring timely escalation of issues to the appropriate team members. The Unit Manager is responsible for the efficient use of fiscal, human, and material resources and provides strong, visible leadership to front line staff.

The Unit Manager position requires graduation from a recognized nursing education program, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, and current CRNA registration. BCLS–HCP certification is required, along with a minimum of five years of recent and relevant Emergency nursing experience and at least two years of supervisory experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Application package provides examples of excellent communication skills. As this role includes a significant clinical component, demonstrated clinical emergency nursing competence is essential, and the successful candidate must be able to effectively balance direct clinical responsibilities with administrative duties, along with the clinical experience necessary to make timely decisions in a fast paced care environment.
Additional Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a positive and enthusiastic attitude, a willingness to take on new challenges, and the ability to communicate in a professional, caring, and compassionate manner. They must have a proven record of leading teams, fostering strong interpersonal relationships, and supporting team development, as well as strong organizational, change management, and decision making skills. Effective oral and written communication skills are required. Experience with family centered care and a collaborative, team based approach is expected.
Preferred Qualifications:
Management experience preferred. Courses: A Leader's Guide to the LEADS Self-Assessment, Change Management Series (CMS) - Part 1 - Leading People Through Transition.
