Unit Manager
Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Unit Manager provides leadership, direction, and organizational oversight for Inpatient Unit 1 and the Clinical Research Unit at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. These units serve a diverse patient population, including Hematology, Oncology, Blood and Marrow Transplant, Eating Disorders, as well as select general pediatrics and off-service mental health cases. The Unit Manager is accountable for unit-level decision-making and plays a key leadership role in advancing the goals of both the Hematology/Oncology/Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and the broader Child Health portfolio. This position supports the vision, mission, and strategic direction of Alberta Health Services, ensuring alignment with its business plan and care priorities.
Description:
The Unit Manager is accountable for the effective management of human, financial, and physical resources within the department. This role provides leadership, direction, and organization for staff activities, including clinical supervision, recruitment, termination, and performance management, in collaboration with the Patient Care Manager. The Unit Manager ensures the delivery of high-quality care aligned with departmental policies, procedures, and goals. As a member of the management team, they contribute to strategic planning, support process improvement initiatives, and help develop and implement operational plans. This role incorporates evidence-based practices into daily operations through collaboration with the management team, physicians, and interdisciplinary staff. The Unit Manager also oversees workflow and resource allocation to ensure efficient patient care delivery. Finally, the Unit Manager fosters a culture of caring by promoting Collaborative Practice and Patient and Family Centered Care.

Graduation from a recognized Bachelor Level Degree nursing education program. Current CRNA registration. Minimum 5 years within the last 10 years acute care nursing experience. Previous leadership experience.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Patient-family oriented with a commitment to providing safe/quality patient care. Leadership skills including, effective communicator, organized, detail orientated, strong coaching and mentorship skills. Strong Inter-professional skills including conflict resolution and negotiation skills. Collaborative approach and ability to build solid interpersonal relationships. Strong Critical thinking, analytical and decision-making skills to support effective problem-solving. Self-directed, highly motivated with a clear pattern of professional and personal development.
Preferred Qualifications:
Unit Manager experience. Master's degree. 5 years within the last 10 years acute pediatric nursing experience. 3 years within the last 5 years’ experience in Hematology/Oncology/BMT. Experience leading quality improvement and/or change initiatives. Experience managing work schedules/rotations. Recruitment experience. Experience in fiscal stewardship. Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Connect Care, e-people, RMS, WFM, Oracle).
