Your Opportunity:

The Unit Clerk on Unit 410 reports directly to the unit manager and is a part of an interprofessional team comprised of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides and Unit Clerks that are involved in comprehensive patient and family centred care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with RAH and AHS policy and procedures. The incumbent will transcribe and process doctors’ orders including medication orders and laboratory orders. This is all part of ensuring that the patient’s chart is accurate and complete, ensuring record keeping be neat and accurate. They are required to perform a variety of detailed clerical and computer tasks including preparing pre-operative charts. Critical thinking and the ability to prioritize multiple competing tasks is essential. The Unit Clerk is responsible for managing the telephones, greeting and directing patients and allied health professionals, and for managing pre-operative patient charts.  The Unit Clerk is often the first point of contact for the Surgical Suite, so strong interpersonal skills are required. Given nature of our patients and the fast-paced environment, effective communication exceptional organizational skills and time management are essential to the smooth running of the Unit. This position involves frequent interaction with the public, members of the Surgical Services Team including physicians, pharmacists, nurses and support staff and the Edmonton Bone and Joint Centre. Unit Clerks have access to a large amount of confidential patient information therefore candidates must have a strong understanding of confidentiality requirements. They maintain a high traffic control desk. They need to ensure an adequate level of supplies are available on the unit for use by the inter-professional team.

Description:

As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.

Additional Required Qualifications:

A one-year Unit Clerk certificate with practicum component from a recognized post-secondary institution is required. The successful completion of a recognized course in medical terminology is necessary. Computer knowledge of Microsoft Office, Connect Care, Netcare, ESP required. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions is required. Ability to follow up on test results is required. Detail to accuracy and timelines is required. Demonstrated excellence with interpersonal communications skills, including telephone skills is required. A commitment to team approach is required. Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a high acuity setting is preferred. Relevant experience will also be considered. Experience in a surgical unit is preferred.
