This position contributes to the care of patients in the medicine program which consists of 14, 18+ bed units and includes many specialized services. The program utilizes a collaborative care model (COACT) including team nursing for patient care and Connect Care for the patient's electronic medical record. The program has a team of CNEs and CNS to support new hire orientation, training in specialized areas and ongoing professional development and initiatives. We strive to utilize evidence-based practice and quality improvement principles to improve patient and family experiences and outcomes. Unit 5G2 is a 19 bed unit consisting of Specialized Geriatric patients as well as Neuro Medicine patients. The unit is dedicated to caring for older adults with diverse medical needs. Description:
The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.

Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.
Additional Required Qualifications:Must be able to work to full scope of practice (physically, mentally and emotionally) on this very busy fast paced unit. Must be able to push, pull and lift at least 50lbs and have the endurance to. In this position, you will be on your feet for an extended period of time (both walking and standing), and you must be able to assist in transporting, lifting and positioning of patients. You will also be required to bend, lift, push, and pull equipment. Proficient written and verbal communication skills required. Strong critical thinking skills and experience with team nursing.
Preferred Qualifications:Preference given to those who have Charge Nurse experience, completed their suite of Indigenous Awareness learning and other required education, experience working with CoACT elements of care. Experience working with patients with strokes, dementia, delirium, and behavioral challenges is considered an asset. Connect Care training is preferred.
