Service Worker II - Main OR, Cardiac Open Heart OR, Minor Surgery
Your Opportunity:
The FMC OR is the Adult Quaternary Level 1 Trauma Centre serving Southern Alberta and surrounding areas. Our OR includes 32 operating rooms and surgeries are performed 365 days per year. Our multidisciplinary team includes Surgeons, Anesthesia, Perioperative RNs, ORTs, RN First Assists and support staff. We proudly provide surgical interventions for over 22,000 patients yearly with the highest standard of care. Under the guidance and supervision of the perioperative registered nurse and TFN/Charge, the Service Worker 2 (SW2) assists with collection of necessary equipment and supplies during the set up in theatres for each surgical procedure as assigned. The respective documented preference list, RN(s) and TFN/charge are used for direction. Under the guidance and supervision of the registered nurse, the SW2 can assist, when necessary, with transferring patients from stretcher to Operating room bed – Operating room bed to stretcher, positioning of patients for surgical procedures, and holding limbs for the surgical prep. The SW2 assists with tagging, communicating and tracking any malfunctioning equipment as directed by immediate supervisor. The SW2 also assist with changing CO2 tanks on laparoscopic towers, cleaning of equipment and stocking of supplies as per scope of practise.
Description:
As a Service Worker II, you will be responsible for readying supplies, and cleaning/disinfecting instruments and specialty equipment for immediate use/reuse by healthcare staff. You will distribute and replenish patient care supplies, perform quality control tests on equipment and record maintenance data. You may also transport patients (clients/residents), equipment, lab specimens, blood and blood products, and patient charts. You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required. In addition, you will ensure that patient care areas and other assigned areas are accurately stocked and that specialty equipment required by the healthcare staff is available.

Grade 12 or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Requires the physical ability to lift floor to waist and above shoulder 25 lbs. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Under the guidance and supervision of the perioperative nurse, the primary role of the SW2 is to move and prepare necessary equipment and supplies for each surgical procedure. The SW2 ensures cleanliness and integrity of equipment, returns equipment to designated locations after use, and ensures equipment storage areas are clean, organized, and accessible. The SW2 tags, removes, communicates, and assists with tracking malfunctioning equipment as directed by RNs or supervisor. Participates with IDs and repairs of soft equipment surface with patches as appropriate. The SW2 participates with changing CO2 tanks on laparoscopic towers as required, cleaning identified equipment during set-up and change-over, and stocking of selective supplies such as cast cart and isolation cart supplies, and other supplies according to identified needs. The SW2 assists with tasks assigned to the SW1 role (such as stocking warmers with blankets and bottled fluids and stocking scrub sinks supplies) according to service needs per direct guidance. Under the guidance and supervision of the registered nurse, the SW2 can assist, when necessary, with transferring patients from stretcher to Operating room bed – Operating room bed to stretcher, positioning of patients for surgical procedures, and holding limbs for the surgical prep.
