Your Opportunity:

Arthur Child Cancer Centre has an excellent opportunity for someone who wants a truly active job in a hospital setting. Portering is physically demanding staff regularly walk the equivalent of 20–30,000+ steps per shift, lift up to 50 lbs (and assist with lifts up to 350 lbs) on a regular basis. This position requires strong stamina, consistent energy, and the ability to stay reliable for the full shift. Porters are responsible for cleaning and disinfecting stretchers, wheelchairs, other equipment, and patient areas as assigned, as well as completing patient, equipment, morgue, blood product, and laboratory specimen transports safely, efficiently, and with professionalism. They must be able to prioritize multiple requests in a fast-paced environment and quickly learn to navigate the site layout to ensure timely service. Strong customer service and communication skills are essential. Porters interact daily with patients, families, and healthcare staff and must do so respectfully and professionally. Comfort using a smartphone-based dispatch system is required to accept assignments, verify patient identity, update progress, and mark tasks as complete. The successful candidate has a patient-first approach and is able to follow oral and written instructions. Motor coordination and hand-eye coordination are needed, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced environment that may be stressful at times. Porters must also wear personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, gowns, eye protection) for long periods of time.We are hiring relief Service Worker (no guarantee of shifts) at Arthur Child Cancer Centre. Schedules may include a combination of day, evening, night, and weekend shifts. Flexibility is the key – we ask for availability of a minimum of four shifts per week. While relief roles don’t guarantee hours many staff successfully transition into regular position.

Description:

As a Service Worker I, you will be responsible for transporting patients (clients/residents) and equipment to and from different patient care areas within a hospital site. You will distribute and replenish hospital supplies throughout the units and clean equipment and patient care areas as directed. You may also transport lab specimens, blood and blood products, and patient charts. You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

Grade 12 or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Physically capable of walking/standing for the entire shift and performing repetitive movements. Able to lift up to 50lbs independently or assist in lifting up to 350 lbs as needed; ability to push and pull patients on stretchers/beds/wheelchairs or equipment (up to 350 lbs). Ability to squat, bend, reach in all directions and good hand and finger coordination to safely handle equipment. Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment for long periods of time (e.g. Surgical and N95 Respiratory Masks, Eye Protection, etc.). To enable applicants to perform their duties safely, they must demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, understand, and follow written and verbal directions in English.  Basic knowledge and operation of a computer and a smartphone.  Dependable, cooperative, customer service attitude and able to work with minimal supervision. Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledgeable of Portering policy and procedures. Previous hospital experience. Knowledge of cleaning and disinfecting in health care environment. Transporting patients, lab specimens and equipment. Customer service experience. Leadership experience such as working leader, shift lead, trainer or equivalent.
