Surgical Care Alberta (SCA) is a new provincial program within ACA that serves as a provincial hub for surgical expertise, standardization, planning and innovation. In the role of Senior Consultant in SCA, you will be a pivotal member of the team. Reporting to the Executive Director, the focus of this position is on coordination and system level surgical planning and coordination. As a member of the broader SCA team, you may be called upon to support other important work or prioritities within the Surgery Provincial Program. This position’s location is negotiable and may be eligible for a remote/hybrid work arrangement, although periodic travel may be required within the province of Alberta. It is an exciting time to join the organization and SCA, as the province works to re-imagine and re-organize healthcare administration and delivery. Description:
Surgical Care Alberta is seeking a forward thinking and experienced Consultant with a strong clinical background in surgery to support system level planning in collaboration with Health Service Delivery Organizations and the broader SCA team. This role will be instrumental in shaping process and communication patterns, developing strategic partnerships, and acts to align site-level operations with provincial strategies and broader system planning. The successful candidate will collaborate with clinical and operational leaders, health system partners, data experts and others in contributing to initiatives aimed at improving access to surgical care and supporting system-level planning. The ideal candidate will bring a deep understanding of surgical systems and structures in Alberta, clinical knowledge, a commitment to equity and excellence, and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments.

Clinical background with a minimum of 3 years direct experience in a surgical environment (including operating rooms, perioperative services, and/or surgical programs) with demonstrated understanding of surgical workflows, infrastructure, equipment, and process. Regulated health professional designation or equivalent clinical experience within surgical services with the ability to credibly engage with surgeons and surgical teams. Demonstrated experience working within complex surgical systems, including interaction with multiple sites, specialties, and care settings (acute, ambulatory, or regional/provincial models). Proven ability to collaborate with clinical and operational leaders to support system planning, service design, or improvement initiatives related to surgical care.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Experience working within a public agency or health care environment. Demonstrated ability to develop organization strategy and planning, leveraging and modeling innovation, and strong communication skills. Demonstrated ability to lead strategic initiatives, manage change to achieve positive results and identify risk and effective mitigation strategies. Demonstrated leadership abilities, including comfort with decision-making and exercising sound judgement. Ability to influence, negotiate, and mediate resolutions to complex situations. Proven ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences and to foster partnerships with key stakeholders to achieve organizational goals. A proven record of engaging in ethical conduct.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex clinical and operational concepts clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, including surgeons, clinical teams, senior leaders, and external partners. Proven presentation skills, including the ability to present recommendations, analyses, and options to senior leadership, governance bodies, and multi-disciplinary forums.
