Your Opportunity:

Strong primary health care is key to a high functioning and more sustainable healthcare system. The AHS Primary Health Care program is uniquely positioned to maintain partnerships at provincial, zonal, and community levels and supports connections between acute and community primary care. There is flexibility as to the location of this position within the Province of Alberta. Your role, provincial in scope, will be to lead the establishment and maintenance of patient safety and quality assurance review structure and processes within the AHS Primary Health Care program. You will support multidisciplinary teams to understand how adverse events in primary health care areas happen and support learning and system-level changes that will improve the quality and safety of care delivery in the province. You understand and have experience with Quality Assurance Reviews and Committees and are passionate about complex systems and the people who work in them. You can provide expert advice and operational solutions regarding patient safety and are equally adept at project management. You are or want to be a leader in supporting safer patient care. You are capable of developing and implementing assigned projects and programs; leading various patient safety meetings, committees and initiatives; and contributing to strategic planning and systematic evaluation of patient safety programs and services in primary health care. You will collaborate with internal and external partners to build a coalition focused on improving patient and family experience focused on patient first that enhances the health care experience for all.

Description:

Reporting into the AHS Primary Health Care program, this Senior Patient Safety Specialist applies patient-safety science to ensure a safe and highly reliable healthcare system. The position achieves this by anticipating, reducing and learning from hazards, close calls and patient harm events associated with system-level failures. The specialist facilitates, supports, and promotes patient safety activities and improvements within the context of primary health care for the Province of Alberta, ensuring alignment with the AHS Patient Safety Plan. Key responsibilities include establishing and supporting Quality Assurance Committees and processes, providing mentorship and support to the chair(s), conducting quality assurance reviews in collaboration with primary care leadership, conducting data analysis, review of adverse events, delivering training on patient safety, and developing educational resources and clinical decision support tools for front-line clinicians within the AHS primary care environment. Representing provincial primary health care patient safety in relevant clinical, zonal, and provincial committees. Staying updated on industry trends and regulations to maintain high patient safety standards is essential. Most importantly, the specialist models a commitment to improving the quality of patient care, cultivating a safety culture, and fostering continuous learning and improvement in healthcare environments.

Required Qualifications:

Baccalaureate degree in a health care discipline is required. A Master’s degree in health care related discipline is preferred. Requires in-depth knowledge at the expert level of the theory and application of patient safety principles, reviews, processes, and tools. Experience supporting Quality Assurance Review processes using the systematic system analysis (SSA) methodology. Advanced skills in written and verbal communication, facilitation, presentations and Microsoft Office suite. Requires in-depth knowledge and proven practical experience of Quality Improvement and Process Improvement principles. Experience and ability to prioritize and balance multiple priorities at the same time. A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development. Preference will be given to those with five (5) years patient safety or investigation experience in a Safety or Risk Manager role.

Preferred Qualifications:

Regulated Healthcare Professional designation AHS’s Quality and Safety courses Healthcare Excellence Canada courses (ex-Canadian Patient Safety Officer designation) Change management certification and practical experience. Project management certification and practice experience an asset. Training and experience in adult education practices and behaviour change principles.
