Health Shared Services has an exciting opportunity for a Supervisor role in our Alberta Cancer Registry (ACR) team. The ACR is a population based registry that records and maintains data on all new cancer cases and cancer deaths occurring in the province and is mandated by the Provincial Health Agencies Act. Accurate and reliable cancer data is essential for cancer surveillance and research as well as planning and evaluating cancer care programs to improve patient care. The registry is a crucial starting point for many data requests by epidemiologists, statisticians, researchers, and healthcare providers. The Supervisor will be required to apply comprehensive knowledge of the health system, cancer registration and operational areas to ensure high quality data for accuracy, validity, completeness and timely reporting vital to supporting decision making of stakeholders. This position will coordinate and oversee the day-to-day operational activities of the ACR including case management, training, quality assurance activities and special projects to support the mandated processes for oncology coding and staging for the ACR and the Alberta Bone Marrow Transplant database. The incumbent will be responsible for leadership and project-based accountabilities, stakeholder engagement and relationship management, as well as team capacity building. The Supervisor must be self-directed and an effective decision maker and communicator. Critical thinking, time management, adaptability to change and taking initiative will be key in leading recommending best practices and leading innovative opportunities for improvement. The successful Supervisor may work out of Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute or Calgary’s Arthur Child J.E. Comprehensive Cancer Centre with option to telework. Description:
As Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing the day to day operational activities. You will be required to stay up to date on cancer registry changes to ensure national and international coding standards are being followed and operating procedures are up to date with best practices. The incumbent will also be responsible for leading change management initiatives, including leading quality assurance projects, training, team capacity building and project-based initiatives locally to support the ACR and ABMTP databases. This includes leading processes related to national and international submissions as necessary to ensure timely, high quality and consistent data. This position is a crucial component of building partnerships with stakeholders, including sitting on national/international committees as well as collaborating with stakeholders to improve best practices for cancer registries. They will work closely with Cancer Advanced Analytics teams to support cancer research and surveillance by assessing end user’s complex needs and identifying opportunities to standardize and improve decision support and research products that will meet their needs. The incumbent will also lead innovative change management initiatives aimed at finding efficiencies and long-term sustainability for the modernization of the Alberta Cancer Registry. The modernization of the ACR is a complex, multi-phase project that will involve changing workflows and processes to utilize innovative tools, such as Artificial Intelligence models. This work involves working with many stakeholders, including vendors, other provincial/territorial cancer agencies and external organizations (e.g. Canadian Partnership Against Cancer). The supervisor will be heavily involved in building the conceptual frameworks as well as implementation and change management plans to ensure a smooth transition.

Completion of diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program. Active or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).
Additional Required Qualifications:
Minimum 5 years with the following: Health care coding experience, working with patient charts to efficiently interpret and abstract health data, within the last 7 years. Demonstrated leadership experience, including decision making responsibilities, coaching/teaching and delegation, in a professional environment. Experience with leading Quality Assurance Projects/Activities. Managing multiple concurrent projects and meeting deadlines. Demonstrated experience with change management in a professional environment. Experience working with clinical applications in Alberta (i.e. Connect Care, ARIA, AXON, NETCARE). Effective communicator with a proven ability to foster partnerships to achieve organizational goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) credential (as per National Cancer Registrar Association) or 3 years experience with oncology coding. Extensive practical experience in policy development, leadership and program management. Demonstrated ability to use strategic thinking, considering long-term goals assessing options and implications. Demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions. LEADS framework training and expertise.
