Your Opportunity:

The Scientist – Mixed Methods is a key applied research and scientific role within Primary Care Alberta. This individual will lead and execute the monitoring, measurement, and evaluation of the Specialty Access programs, ensuring the application of scientific principles to achieve high-quality, effective and efficient care for Albertans. This role fosters innovation by mobilizing and integrating scientific thinking to improve access to specialty care leading to improved experiences for patients. Provincial Specialty Access consists of four interdependent interventions namely: (1) an integrated, province-wide centralized system for intake and distribution of referrals (2) A provincewide system to provide non-urgent specialty advice for primary care providers (3) co-designing and implementing clinical, patient and referral pathways (4) establishing electronic referral solutions as the default system for referring patients for specialty care. The Scientist plays a key role in supporting evidence-informed decision-making by integrating and analyzing complex data from multiple sources. This position provides expert scientific counsel to Specialty Access leadership and Primary Care Alberta teams, contributing to strategic initiatives, program evaluation, and knowledge translation. This position will be part of Primary Care Alberta effective November 18, 2024. Description:

Scientific Expertise: Contribute their in-depth knowledge of scientific methodologies (qualitative & quantitative) to address complex problems effectively. Leads, collaborates and coordinates with multidisciplinary teams, providing direction and scientific advice on all business functions that include the planning, development, implementation and assessment of Specialty Access. Serve as the primary liaison between Specialty Access components to synthesize information for measurement, evaluation and reporting. Provides expert counsel and uses advanced knowledge to support and solve unique and complex data problems related to the short, medium and longterm impact of the Specialty Access programs. Leads independent investigations and continuously builds expert knowledge in specific areas of scientific expertise. Works with and understand linkages between multiple data sources to build the infrastructure to capture administrative and clinical data in near real time, clean and analyze the data and display the data on dashboards using various data visualization techniques. Oversees analysis (quantitative and qualitative) and interpretation of results for that generate evidence for decision making. Presents scientific evidence in meetings and seminars internal and external to PCA. Prepares and presents findings, providing consultation and advice to stakeholders. Drafts written and oral reports for scientific and lay audiences and authoring scientific manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals in collaboration with clinical teams. Performs analysis for multiple projects including cross functional complex operational and research initiatives. Provides scientific consultation to leadership, physicians, and specialty access team to advance provincial program initiatives and innovations. ‘Leading Up’ is an essential skill for the Scientist.

Required Qualifications:

A Doctorate degree in a health-related research discipline with a focus on mixed-methods training, plus a minimum of 3 years’ experience undertaking research and evaluation projects using both qualitative and quantitative methods. A minimum of 5 years of experience conducting complex statistical analyses for epidemiologic and/or health services research. Extensive knowledge of mixed methods to inform measurement choices, evaluation study design, data collection, analysis interpretation and reporting regarding the advancement of work. A demonstrated clear pattern of professional and personal development. Experience in the appraisal of needs and priorities, at different scales (community-level and provincial) of health surveillance. Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills. Proven ability to lead, coordinate and manage multidisciplinary projects that involve multiple stakeholders.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Proven ability to liaise with senior leaders in health care, researchers, planners and senior administrators throughout PCA, AHS, academic institutions, Alberta Health, and outside agencies and organizations. Excellent critical appraisal skills. Strong conceptual and problem-solving skills. Strong organizational skills, influential skills, client focused orientation and commitment to providing quality services. Demonstrated ability to work well in a high-paced team setting and independently.


Preferred Qualifications:

Any training or experience in health economics would be an asset.
