Your Opportunity:
The Alberta Health Services Clinical Trials Unit (AHS CTU) is a centralized support unit dedicated to facilitating high-quality clinical trials in Alberta, by providing comprehensive support services to clinical trial investigators and sponsors. The Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is seeking a detailed oriented and motivated Research Associate to provide comprehensive financial and administrative support for clinical research operations. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and compliance of all financial activities within the CTU. Reporting to the CTU Manager, the Research Associate will be responsible for financial and administrative support for clinical research activities. The ideal candidate will be able to lead and support contract and budget negotiations for clinical trial projects, ensuring cost accuracy, full cost recovery, and competitiveness in sponsor agreements. Manage all aspects of financial administration, including invoicing, payment tracking, account reconciliation, and budget monitoring. Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to enhance financial efficiency, accuracy, and internal control processes. Identify and mitigate financial and administrative risks through proactive oversight and effective internal control measures. Ensure that all financial activities adhere to AHS accounting standards, research regulations, and sponsor requirements. Prepare and interpret financial performance metrics, providing recommendations to optimize resource utilization and improve financial sustainability. Collaborate with investigators, research staff, sponsors, and institutional finance teams to ensure seamless financial operations across all studies. The candidate will possess strong analytical and organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
Description:
As a Research II, you will be responsible for coordinating research activities which generate and disseminate new knowledge that assists with advancing the understanding of health disciplines and various health and medical concerns. Working with the principal investigator, you will assist with the study design and development of research protocols, determine appropriate data collection methods and measurement procedures, interpret results, develop recommendations and coordinate study approvals. You will also contribute to grant submissions and budgeting, conduct literature reviews and environmental scans and provide day-to-day oversight of research studies/projects.

Master's degree in a health or science related field. Registration with applicable professional association or college where required.
Additional Required Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration, Minimum of 3 years of current experience in financial management, within research, academic, or healthcare environment.. Demonstrated expertise in research finance, including the development and management of clinical trial budgets, financial analysis, and contract or grant administration. In-depth knowledge of institutional and sponsor financial policies, regulatory compliance, and best practices in research finance. Proficient in financial management systems and advanced Microsoft Excel, with a strong ability to analyze, report, and optimize financial data. Possesses hands-on experience with the OnCore Clinical Trial Management System (CTMS),, and a thorough understanding of Alberta Health Services (AHS) financial policies, procedures, and processes. Experienced in navigating the University of Alberta Research Ethics and collaborating with pharmaceutical sponsors and clinical research organizations (CROs). Proficient in the administration of participant payments, including the use of Greenphire and My ClinCard, ensuring accurate and compliant disbursement for study visits. Exceptional attention to detail, analytical ability, and organizational skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Knowledge of clinical trial regulations and guidelines (ICH-GCP training, Health Canada and FDA).
