Your Opportunity:

The department of Cancer Epidemiology & Prevention Research is hiring a Research Assistant. This position will undertake epidemiological research to improve care and outcomes for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer. The position requires extensive collaboration within the team and with personnel throughout the province, with a particular emphasis on Cancer Care Alberta personnel.

Description:

The key function of the Research Assistant is to conduct epidemiological research, including statistical analysis and scientific academic writing, and assist in securing funding for future research projects under the guidance of the Principal Investigator. This position requires independent judgement, excellent time management skills, detailed documentation, and strong written and verbal communication skills. Accountabilities/Tasks and Duties: Conduct background research, such as searches, critical appraisal and summary of literature and meta-analyses to support projects. Assist in the design of epidemiological research studies, including recruitment and data collection materials. Undertake data cleaning/verification and thoroughly document data analysis plans, decisions and execution. Lead accurate and timely analysis of epidemiological health data (of various types) of young cancer patients in accordance with project objectives and deliverables. Interpret analysis and prepare research manuscripts to be submitted for publication and/or presentation. Draft research grant proposals for provincial, national and international funding competitions. Assists with obtaining ethics, operational and/or administrative approvals. Employ resourceful, innovative, and creative problem solving. Learn new epidemiological and statistical methods to better address research objectives. Advise and instruct researchers, assistants and students regarding epidemiological methodologies and analytical processes. Support other research projects by providing knowledge, skills, and on-the-job training to others. Ensure that supervisor is kept informed of progress of activities and progress of work.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s or PhD degree in Epidemiology. 1-3 years of related research experience. Extensive knowledge of obtaining, managing, and analyzing quantitative health data using statistical software (Stata, R). History of published papers in scientific, peer reviewed journals. Previous experience in writing successful peer-reviewed grants or scholarships. Demonstrated communication, organization, innovation and interpersonal skills. Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications: Excel, Word, Access, and Publisher. Must be flexible and open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using large, complex datasets, including administrative health and registry data, will be considered a strong asset. Experience in the design and conduct of qualitative research studies will be considered a strong asset. Specialized certification in knowledge translation and implementation science will be considered a strong asset. Knowledge of Alberta health care system and available databases will be considered a strong asset. Knowledge of oncology will be considered a strong asset.
