Your Opportunity:

The Emergency Mental Health Regularized Relief Team is part of the Emergency Departments at the Royal Alexandra and University of Alberta Hospitals. They provide exemplary mental health care for patients in a collaborative, interdisciplinary team environment. Services include comprehensive addiction and mental health assessment, short-term intervention, and treatment. Also includes coordination of community outpatient follow-up and facilitation of admission when required. The Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RN/RPN) provides care for patients in accordance with AHS Addiction & Mental Health Principles of Care, the standards of practice of CRPNA/CRNA. The Emergency Mental Health Team is committed to the alleviation of stigma and discrimination related to mental health and addiction. The principles of person-centered nursing, recovery and trauma informed care is foundational to this specialized nursing practice. The RPN/RN provides safe, evidence-based therapeutic interventions and completes assessments, plans, and organizes treatment/therapeutic interventions, documents and evaluates interventions. The RPN/RN models professional leadership and provides decision-making support by collaborating and delegating within the inter-professional team. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. Description:

As a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN), you will provide leadership through a wide variety of nursing services to patients (clients, residents) for the purpose of promoting, maintaining or restoring health, mental health and preventing mental illness, injury and disability. You will teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and take necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care, while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Psychiatric nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta (CRPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years of recent (within last 5 years) in-patient mental health nursing experience with demonstrated knowledge, skill, and ability in the care of patients with concurrent disorders. (Experience may be considered). Demonstrated knowledge of the application of the Mental Health Act. Knowledge of AHS Addiction & Mental Health Principles of Care Edmonton Zone and related program policy, procedures, and guidelines (i.e., Suicide Risk Assessment & Management Policy & Procedure, Mental Health Safety Precautions Policy, Mental Health Observation Policy & Levels Procedure). Demonstrated knowledge of the assessment and management of co-morbid medical disorders. Demonstrated knowledge of key components of a comprehensive addiction and mental health assessment. Knowledge of risk assessment and management, including knowledge of trauma informed care and alternatives to seclusion and restraint, and associated risks. Knowledge and practice of safe and secure environment for clients/families/teams by listening, discussing, exploring, clarifying, and acting on their concerns, needs and priorities. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training (or successful completion as part of clinical orientation). Demonstrated leadership, superior problem solving, critical thinking skills and strong team building skills. Interpersonal and de-escalation skills. Ability to handle multiple competing priorities while working in a constantly dynamic environment. Knowledge of psychopharmacology, including current psychotropic medications and side effects. Knowledge of community resources. Familiarity with Connect Care.
