Locum Registered Nurses provide short-term, fulltime assignments ranging from three weeks to one year in Acute Care (Emergency, OR, Obstetrics, ICU, NICU, Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Mental Health), Home Care, and Continuing Care. From prairie grasslands to boreal forests, you’ll experience communities with unique cultures, landscapes, and healthcare needs. In this role, you will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for diverse patient populations while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and managing changing priorities. As a locum nurse, you’ll bring your expertise to support sites where your skills are needed most, including in rural or remote environments. Locum Incentives (pilot extended until October 1, 2026): $25/hour locum premium for hours worked. $50/day rural incentive for assignments outside Grande Prairie & Fort McMurray. Daily per diem $25.40 + meal allowance $57/day. Travel reimbursement & provided accommodation. As an HSS employee in the RN/RPN Locum Program, you will support northern Alberta’s four new Provincial Health Agencies and Alberta Health Services. Description:
As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Minimum of one year nursing experience. Experience in at least one of the following departments is required; acute care, emergency, intensive care, operating room, obstetrics, continuing care, home care, or psychiatry.
Additional Required Qualifications:At least one year (minimum 1,920 hours) of recent registered nurse experience within Canada in your specific area of expertise—Canadian experience is essential to ensure familiarity with local standards and patient care environments. Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:Experience working in rural settings with limited resources. Charge Nurse experience. Triage experience (CTAS) for ED role. Case management and RAI training for Home Care role. ORNAC perioperative nursing program for OR role. Ability to work independently as the sole healthcare practitioner at a site. Additional certifications specific to area of expertise.
