Recreation Therapist II
Your Opportunity:
The Advanced Practice Recreation Therapist II will lead/support the RT department through program development, quality improvement initiatives, staff education, and student coordination, while also providing high-quality direct patient care on a geriatric inpatient unit with occasional coverage within the dept as needed. The therapist will engage staff in discipline specific projects to drive best practices, ensure the dept's alignment with current standards, and facilitate patient care. Key Responsibilities: Program Leadership: Lead RT program development, quality improvement, and research activities. Ensure staff engagement in all phases of implementation, evaluation, and practice refinement; Council Participation: Participate in zone or provincial RT councils or initiatives, representing the dept in broader discussions that influence practice across the region; Connect Care Lead: Act as the CC lead, ensuring proper system use, providing coaching, and facilitating staff education on updates or changes; Education & Best Practices: Identify, share, and promote educational materials, best practice research, and learning opportunities for the RT team to enhance their clinical skills and service delivery. Provide general onboarding and orientation to new staff to ensure they align with best practices; Student Coordination & Supervision: Coordinate student placements by managing interviews, setting up access to systems, and serving as a liaison between students, preceptors, and educational institutions. Provide orientation/supervise students; Prof Dev: Actively participate in ongoing professional dev activities and required learning, ensuring continued growth and alignment with evolving industry practices. Additional Duties: Undertake other responsibilities as directed by the manager, contribute to the overall success of the department and its initiatives.
Description:
As a Recreation Therapist II, you will take a leadership role in ensuring that the level of therapeutic recreation practice in your clinical area is evidence based, patient-and family-centred and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice. You will provide clinical leadership to ensure safe and efficient care as well as coordinate the assessment, treatment, education and care of the patient (client, resident). You will participate in program development to ensure effective delivery of services, including the development of protocols, forms, education, and quality improvement initiatives. You will complete assessment, treatment, education and management of clients¿ treatment progress and provide clinical support and consultation. You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the client and family.

Completion of bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies. Active or eligible registration for Professional Membership with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA). Minimum three years' related clinical experience as a Recreation Therapist.
Additional Required Qualifications:Minimum of five years of clinical rehabilitation practice, with direct experience supervising students. Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to professional development, continually enhancing advanced practice skills. Leadership abilities will be evident in their capacity to build relationships, coach others, and lead collaboratively within interprofessional teams. This includes expertise in role clarification, conflict resolution, team dynamics, and providing person/family-centered care. The successful candidate will show initiative and consistently uphold behaviours aligned with AHS values and must be highly effective in self-management, demonstrate strong organizational abilities, possess advanced computer literacy. Interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills must be exceptional, enabling them to navigate complex interactions with ease. The physical demands of the role vary, as clinical duties may require standing, lifting, bending, or rotating during therapeutic interventions, along with extended periods of sitting for computer work. Must have a strong understanding of professional legislation, regulations, and organizational policies. Demonstrate a high level of independence in clinical decision-making, navigating sensitive situations with confidence. This individual will excel in an environment of continuous change/learning, displaying innovative systems-thinking and a solution-focused approach to challenges.
Preferred Qualifications:Therapeutic Recreation rehabilitation experience is preferred. Experience with standardized assessment tools and Connect Care and Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) designation is preferred. Aquatic Therapy experience is an asset.
