Your Opportunity:

The Public Health Inspector II – Housing/Vulnerable Populations Specialist is a key member of the Safe Built Environments team, supporting district public health inspectors with a busy rental housing inspection program. The Specialist collaborates closely with the housing team and works in coordination with broader Zone programs to promote safe and healthy living environments. This role includes assisting with complex inspection cases, including those involving hoarding/squalor conditions. The Specialist plays an active role by participating in and coordinating activities of Safe Built Environments with the City of Edmonton-led Residential Inspection Safety Compliance Team. Working collaboratively within this multidisciplinary team, the Specialist is responsible for scheduling inspections and conducting application-based assessments to support safe and compliant residential environments. The Specialist works closely with the Program Manager and Coordinator, maintaining regular communication and providing routine updates on work activities to team members. The Specialist represents the Zone on the Provincial Housing Committee. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong relationship-building skills with external partners and the ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, and professionalism when navigating challenging or conflict situations encountered in the course of their duties. The Specialist is expected to have a solid understanding of external services and supports available to vulnerable populations. This position also provides coverage for other Specialists or Coordinator as needed and may be assigned additional specialty duties within the Public Health Inspector II scope, as directed by program management. Responsibilities may also include attending meetings and public forums, some of which may take place outside of regular working hours.

Description:

As a Public Health Inspector II and appointed Executive Officer under the authority of the Public Health Act, you will be responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive environmental public health program. As a Public Health Inspector II, you will have advanced technical expertise in the areas of public health epidemiology, environmental science and engineering, and scientific research. In addition to the duties required for the enforcement of the Public Health Act, you will act as a zone lead responsible for specialized technical advice and services in one or more of the environmental public health service delivery areas on a zone/provincial basis. You will support individual and community wellness through monitoring inspections, disease surveillance, consultation and enforcement of the Public Health Act and regulations.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health or in a related field of study plus a recognized Environmental Health technical program. Completion of certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada). Active Member in Good Standing with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years' experience working in an Enviromental Public Health housing program. Demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal, time management and organizational skills. Experience working in a complex urban environment with numerous internal and external partners. The successful candidate may possess further education or credentials in related fields.
