Red Deer has an exciting opportunity for the Mental Health Aide (MHA) on our adult inpatient psychiatric Units 34/36. The MHA provides patient centered care as a key member of the collaborative team. The MHA is responsible to follow the care plan using their knowledge, skills and abilities to provide safe and competent care, and is expected to follow AHS values, principles, and code of conduct; and must comply with relevant legislation, regulations; and AHS policies, procedures and guidelines. Strong verbal communication skills that support verbal messages being received and understood. Active listening skills. Congruent non-verbal communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain relationships built on mutual respect, appropriate sensitivity and transparency, empathy, and compassion with patients, families, colleagues, professional and medical staff. Ability to manage emotions and strong feelings, maintain a calm and tactful composure under a broad range of challenging circumstances, and to think clearly and stay focused under pressure. Ability to work cooperatively and productively with others. Ability to enhance, support, empower and otherwise increase patient engagement in treatment and change. Description:
As a Psychiatric Aide, you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team to meet the personal care needs and comforts of patients in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs as well as assist with organized activities or programs. In this position, you will observe and report on a patient¿s mood, health, well-being, maintain effective communication with patients and health professionals, assist with the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors as well as assist in the general support of the work area.

Completion of Grade 12. A combination of education and experience satisfactory to the employer will also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:Health care aide certification. Post-secondary education in Social Sciences, Psychology or Health Services. Experience working with persons with addiction and/or mental health issues in a hospital setting.
