Your Opportunity:

Help improve emergency health service delivery, practice, and outcomes for patients and EMS professionals alike! Emergency Health Services (EHS) is now seeking an individual who merges strong background in paramedical science and research with the ability to recommend and apply large-scale change for the position of Program Chief, Evidence and Innovation. This key leadership role is targeted at system and practice improvement and delivering measurable changes in operational performance, care quality, and workforce safety and support for emergency health professionals. In this role, you will provide system-level direction and support to operational areas that ensure EHS staff have the tools and support they need for their daily work, and that EHS practices remain innovative and effective. You will lead applied research methodologies, translate evidence, make recommendations, and spearhead initiatives for province-wide program improvement across EHS. Emergency Health Services (EHS) – Alberta manages all aspects of the emergency health services system in the province. Every year, more than 4,200 EHS-Alberta professionals support nearly a half a million emergency and transfer calls, both on the ground and in the air. Description:

The Program Chief, Evidence and Innovation (PC - E&I) provides organization‑wide leadership in optimizing emergency services delivery, quality, and innovation across Alberta. Reporting to the Chief, People and Practice Excellence, this role is responsible for providing expert advice and recommendations and leading measurable improvements in operational performance, care quality, and workforce safety and support for emergency health professionals. The PC – E&I directs evaluation and impact modelling of initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and long‑term goals. In this role, the PC – E&I oversees targeted clinical and operational audits, development of the paramedic performance lab, evidence reviews, and environmental scans to identify emerging trends and best practices. This role leads a team and oversees methodological rigor in evidence generation, knowledge-creation strategies, innovation testing, knowledge translation, quality improvement, and implementation support. The role ensures relevant clinical, operational, and well‑being measures are collected and used for reporting, manages information requests, guides testing and evaluation, and oversees timely communication of findings and safety issues and external knowledge‑sharing through conferences and publications. This position builds strategic relationships with internal partners, regulators, and academic institutions, supports credible research collaborations, and champions person‑centred, evidence‑informed practices that empower and support emergency health professionals.

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in Emergency Health Services. Extensive experience in applied research methods, translating evidence into practice, quality improvement, and implementation science. Demonstrated ability to manage a moderate sized program budget that may include grant funding. Research-based master’s degree in health-related field (e.g., Community Health Services, Medical Sciences).


Additional Required Qualifications:

Strong understanding and experience with EHS clinical care, systems, and work environment. Experience participating in system strategy planning and prioritization. Experience managing interdisciplinary teams of senior out-of-scope professionals as well as in-scope staff. Proven ability to foster collaboration with healthcare partners, academic institutions, and other EHS interest holders (funding agencies, non-profit groups, public safety organizations.) Experience communicating findings to various audiences and making recommendations, using specialized digital tools and project management to support implementation.


Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in health-related field preferred. Current academic appointment or ability to pursue appointment desirable. Working with academic colleagues in various time zones, the individual will need to be flexible with work hours to accommodate large time zone variations such as Australia, UK, etc.
