Description:
Reporting to the Executive Director, Critical Care and Respiratory Services for the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the NICU Patient Care Manager (PCM) provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Philip C. Etches NICU. Aligned with Alberta Health Services’ vision of Healthy Albertans. Healthy Communities. Together, the PCM ensures the consistent delivery of safe, high quality, family centred care for critically ill and premature newborns within the complex environment of the NICU. The PCM is responsible for coordinating all aspects of NICU operations, including clinical workflow, staffing, resource allocation, and adherence to AHS policies, professional standards, and evidence informed practices. The role is accountable for operational performance and demonstrates fiscal responsibility. The PCM leads the coordination of complex workstreams, ensures alignment between clinical teams and project objectives, and proactively identifies risks, interdependencies, and mitigation strategies. This role works closely with internal and external stakeholders—including physicians, frontline staff, operational leaders, quality teams, and patient families—to design and implement solutions that improve efficiency, quality, and safety across the NICU environment. The PCM also plays a key leadership role in the successful delivery of a major, multi phase project within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This position is responsible for overseeing project planning, execution, change management, and evaluation to ensure the initiative advances organizational priorities and enhances clinical, operational, and patient care outcomes.

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent is required. Active registration with a provincial regulatory college (or eligibility), preferred for clinically focused projects. Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience within healthcare, preferably in acute care, critical care, or pediatric/neonatal services. Demonstrated understanding of leading a large scale, multi phase projects involving clinical operations, workflow redesign, quality improvement, or capital/technology initiatives. Proven success applying structured project management methodologies, including planning, scheduling, risk management, and progress monitoring. Experience managing complex stakeholder groups, including clinical teams, physicians, operational leaders, and partner organizations. Strong background in continuous improvement, change management, and implementing evidence based practices. Experience with data driven decision making, including analyzing operational, quality, and financial metrics to inform project direction.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Proficiency with project management tools and software (e.g., MS Project, Excel, Visio, Smartsheet). Strategic thinking and ability to align project goals with broader organizational priorities. Demonstrated leadership in fostering a positive workplace culture that values innovation, teamwork, and high-quality care. Capacity to mentor and support staff during large-scale change, ensuring engagement and readiness. Strong skills in organizational change, including readiness assessment, stakeholder engagement, communication planning, and sustainment strategies. Ability to manage competing priorities, navigate ambiguity, and lead teams through complex transitions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey project goals, progress, and issues to diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to build trust, facilitate collaboration, and influence decision making across multiple disciplines. Commitment to patient and family centered care, safety, and operational excellence.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Health Administration, Leadership, Business, or a related discipline considered an asset. Formal training or certification in project management (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2, CAPM) or change management (e.g., Prosci/ADKAR) is an asset. Advanced understanding of NICU or pediatric acute care environments, including patient flow, staffing, and interdisciplinary collaboration preferred.
