Your Opportunity:

Reporting to the Manager of the Eye Clinic, the Ophthalmic Assistant performs basic tests and eye measurements to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. They are responsible for testing visual acuity in adults and children, obtaining the chief complaint and history of present illness, documenting ocular, medical, and family history, recording medication history and drug allergies, performing lensometry, auto-refraction, and eye pressure measurements by Tonopen and applanation tonometry, applying topical eye drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate the eyes, performing a-scan biometry using the IOL Master, assisting in preparation of patients for laser and minor office procedures, and maintaining and stocking basic instruments and supplies, respectively. They may perform other basic tests and measurements as requested by the Ophthalmologist and educate and instruct patients concerning eye care and medications. The Ophthalmic Assistant works closely with ophthalmologists, residents, ophthalmic personnel, RN’s and support staff to ensure that patients are screened appropriately and seen in a timely fashion. They will participate in educational rounds and in-services and maintain good medical knowledge in ocular anatomy, diseases, and management, including current available treatments and clinical trials. They must also understand infection control in terms of proper sterilization and disinfection. The Eye Institute of Alberta is the only hospital-based comprehensive eye treatment centre in northern Alberta. Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Ophthalmic Assistant course from an accredited institution and certification as an Ophthalmic. Assistant (COA) from the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). Consideration may be given to those currently in the certification process.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum of one year's experience as an Ophthalmic Assistant required. CPR required (Heart and Stroke Foundation).
