Nurse Practitioner - Critical Care
Your Opportunity:
The FMC ICU is a 33 + bed multisystem ICU with specialty services in Neuro Intensive Care, Trauma, & Burns. This position will provide frontline clinical care within all aspects of the delivery of critical care at FMC which includes care of patients within the ICU , consults and outreach/code 66 calls anywhere within the FMC site and Arthur Child Cancer Centre. This role is initially for daytime work with potential of the inclusion of some night-time shifts in the future. Reporting to the Manager of the ICU and FMC ICU Medical Director, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will manage patients admitted to the ICU and collaborate with the ICU team including Physicians, nursing staff and leaders, allied health team members (including but not limited to Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, Social Work and Physiotherapy), subspecialists and FMC administration to ensure seamless transfers into and out of the ICU for this complex, high needs, patient group. You will provide comprehensive, holistic and patient-family centred care and contribute to patient care through advanced clinical practice, leadership, consultations, referrals, education and research. In addition, you will provide nursing education and leadership, and will be involved in ongoing quality improvement initiatives and program development related to ICU patients. The NP requires strong interpersonal skills and ability to build collaborative and trusting relationships with staff, the management team, physicians and all members of the interdisciplinary team and will demonstrate skills in the areas of communication, organization, critical thinking, conflict resolution, advanced problem solving, interdisciplinary leadership and change management. A passion for caring for patients with medical complexity, and their families, is essential.

As a Nurse Practitioner (NP), you will provide a full range of comprehensive health services to individuals across their lifespan. You will be responsible for integrating clinical skills associated with nursing and medicine to assess, diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatment, and perform procedures to manage and meet the health needs of patients. Additionally, you will utilize advanced practice nursing competencies related to Clinical Practice, Leadership and Optimizing Health Systems, Education, and Research to increase care quality, promote appropriate use of health services, and inform and influence healthcare systems. Successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program, with a minimum of a Master's degree. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) on the Nurse Practitioner Registrar, including Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licensure. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Completion of a Master’s Degree in Nursing – Nurse Practitioner Program (Adult or Family/All Ages). Current ACLS certification. Demonstrated ongoing responsibility for maintaining continuing professional and practice competencies through professional development activities.
Preferred Qualifications:NP experience in ICU or acute care patient setting. ICU experience as a RN in the last 5 years. CNCC(C) or CNA Certification. Proven experience of successful teaching. Experience with the development and/or implementation of research and/or evidence-based practice, and program development. AHS AIW and/or AHS PROSCI certification (or equivalent). Completion of leadership related courses / progressive nursing leadership experience within last 3 years.
