The Unit Manager is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre Dental Clinic. This unique clinic is part of Alberta Health Services and provides dental care to patients, including medically complex patients and those undergoing cancer treatment. The Unit Manager oversees a diverse team of direct reports, including Registered Dental Hygienists, Registered Dental Assistants, Registered Nurses, and administrative staff. Through effective clinical leadership, mentoring, and coaching, the Unit Manager fosters a culture of excellence and ensures the delivery of patient- and family-centered care. Key responsibilities include the effective and efficient management of human, material, and financial resources, as well as promoting staff engagement, satisfaction, and performance. The role requires strong leadership and a commitment to demonstrating the values of Alberta Health Services while supporting a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment. A comprehensive understanding of dental clinic operations is essential. In addition, the Unit Manager is expected to maintain open, timely, and effective communication with the multidisciplinary team and the Patient Care Manager. The position reports to the Manager of Medical Outpatients, which includes the Colon Cancer Screening Centre, Endoscopy, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, GI Central Access and Triage (CAT), Microbial Therapy (MT), and the Dental Clinic.
Description:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, supporting and promoting the safe and efficient flow of referrals, patients, and procedures within the clinic. The Unit Manager is accountable for the day-to-day operations and service delivery of the assigned areas, ensuring activities are coordinated effectively to meet patient care needs. Key responsibilities include workforce planning and management, including staffing, recruitment, onboarding, performance coaching, completion of performance reviews, and participation in performance management processes. The Unit Manager serves as a knowledgeable clinical and operational resource for dentistry services and the multidisciplinary team, supporting daily operations and the implementation of Alberta Health Services initiatives. The role also provides mentorship and guidance to staff, fostering professional growth, continuous learning, and excellence in patient care. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team and the Patient Care Manager, the Unit Manager facilitates effective communication, coordination, and problem-solving to support the delivery of high-quality, patient- and family-centered care.

Completion of recognized Registered dental Assistant (RDA), Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) or Dental. Office Manager post-secondary education or equivalent. At least 5 years in the last 6 years' experience working as a Registered dental Assistant (RDA), Registered. Dental Hygienist (RDH) or Dental Office Manager in a dental clinic in Alberta.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Effective communicator. Leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching, and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others. Ability to manage human, financial, and physical resources within an operating environment. Demonstrated ability to run and interpret financial data and oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable processes. Proven ability to foster partnerships and working relationships with stakeholders. Keen understanding of dentistry and dental clinic operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Dental Office Manager training courses and Change Management courses preferred. IV/ Sedation/ surgical dentistry experience preferred.
