Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) is a 600 bed acute care hospital located in northeast Calgary, Alberta, Canada and is operated by Alberta Health Services. The PLC offers both inpatient and outpatient services to a variety of medical, surgical, pediatric and women's health patients. Unit 43 at PLC is a 32 bed unit with a dual focus of medicine and medical-psychiatry care, providing services to a variety of patients with complex medical and psychiatric issues. This passionate team is seeking an enthusiastic leader who is familiar with the operational and nursing processes of an acute care unit. The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic leadership team which is always entertaining new and creative solutions, has recently implemented a quality management framework to monitor key metric performance, enjoys team camaraderie, and engages in shared learning and development. Reporting to the Manager, the Unit Manager (UM) is a key leadership role supporting the goals and strategic direction of Unit 43, the medicine portfolio and PLC, as well as supporting the vision, mission and health/business plan of Alberta Health Services. The UM works in a decision-making and accountability relationship with the Manager, and the Unit Managers for Units 42 and 54. Description:
The UM is responsible and accountable for making department level decisions and for providing front line team leadership and organization to Unit 43. As well, the UM promotes excellence, safety, quality and support of innovation in the clinical provision of patient care. The UM is a strong leader who promotes professional team development and creates and sustains a healthy work environment which includes team culture, emotional resiliency, and occupational health and safety. The UM coordinates staff to align with clinical demand, which includes recruitment, scheduling, retention, performance evaluation, and performance management. Additionally, the UM coordinates equipment and supply needs with fiscal evaluation. The UM establishes and maintains positive and productive working relationships with both clinical and administrative leaders within the medicine portfolio, PLC as a whole, and the zone. In promoting the PLC principle of patient and family-centred care, the UM liaises with patients and their families to establish positive working relationships and support efficient and effective transitions in care. The successful incumbent will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: consistently role models AHS values, ability to balance multiple, competing demands and conflicting priorities; excellent analytical and decision-making skills; effective facilitator of proven change management principles within teams; excellent communication skills and leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others; conflict resolution and negotiation skills; ability to manage human, financial and physical resources; strong track record in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Bachelor’s degree in a health-related discipline. Current registration with the appropriate professional association. Minimum two years previous experience in an informal or formal health services leadership role, ideally in an acute care environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in a health-related discipline. Minimum 3 years’ experience in the past five years working in an acute care environment. Clinical or leadership experience in both medicine and psychiatry an asset. AIW (Alberta Improvement Way) or equivalent Quality Improvement methodology (Lean, Six Sigma) training. Change management training (Prosci).
