Licensed Practical Nurse - Unit 3F4 Ortho Float Pool Surgery Program
Your Opportunity:
The 3F4 Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Float Pool position provides nursing care to nine 18+ bed units consisting of Ortho, General Surgery, Plastic/Reconstructive, Urology, ENT/Otolarangology and Trauma. Patients are received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care unit and directly from home and/or surgery clinics. Decisions are made in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment. As an LPN, you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and families. The LPN provides safe and effective nursing care according to hospital policies and nursing care standards. Working within the full scope of practice, the LPN observes, monitors, reports, and documents changes in the patients physical, mental, and emotional state, assists the patient with activities of daily living and provides the patient and family with relevant information and teaching. The LPN is responsible to collaborate as a member of the health care team, delivering consistent quality care, to meet the needs of the patient.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Successful candidate is expected to pass the medication calculation exam (80% score) provided by the surgery program within 14 days of orientation. Medication Calculation exams are provided during the surgery orientation days or scheduled by the CNE. The candidate has 3 attempts to pass the exam within the 2-week orientation period. Current adult surgical nursing experience as an LPN within the last 3 years, with one-year minimum experience, is required. Phase 2 LPN certifications, including parenteral nutrition, central lines and blood administration. Demonstrated excellent assessment, documentation, clinical, organizational and patient care skills. Ability to deal with stressful situations, prioritize complex patient care needs and demands, prioritize workload assignment and cope with frequent interruptions. Connect Care trained. Ability to lift 25-50 pounds, must not have current activity restrictions, such as pulling, pushing, reaching and bending. Note: Rotation subject to change.
Preferred Qualifications:Preference given to applicants with current Adult General Surgery experience. Current IV therapy, Pre-op/Post-op care protocols, Central line/PICC care, Ostomy care, basic surgical wound/drain care, complex wound care and negative pressure wounds (VAC dressing), NG tube insertion and management. Strong patient teaching skills.
