Licensed Practical Nurse
Your Opportunity:
Build broad inpatient surgical expertise while making a meaningful difference across the Royal Alexandra Hospital’s Surgery Program. We are seeking adaptable and motivated Licensed Practical Nurses with recent inpatient surgical experience who thrive in fast-paced acute care environments. As part of an interprofessional team, you will use nursing processes, clinical judgment, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to provide safe, high-quality, patient- and family-centered care. This position offers a supported pathway into surgical float nursing. You will begin by orienting to two inpatient surgical units and gradually expand your practice as your competence and confidence grow, with the opportunity to eventually float across up to nine units. This progressive approach builds broad surgical expertise while ensuring you are well prepared for each new practice environment. In this role, you will: Provide safe, compassionate, and responsive care to diverse inpatient surgical populations. Collaborate closely with nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, and support staff. Adapt effectively to changing patient needs, clinical priorities, and unit environments. Participate in front-line quality improvement initiatives. Support strategies that promote consistently high-quality care across the Surgery Program. Practise in accordance with your education, experience, demonstrated competencies, and AHS policies and procedures.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Excellent time-management, organization, and prioritization skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced acute care environment. Strong clinical judgment, problem-solving, critical-thinking, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. Understanding of CoACT and collaborative care within the acute care setting. Ability and willingness to progressively develop the competencies required to work across multiple inpatient surgical units. All theoretical components of the following modules must be completed before attending Surgery Orientation: Standard 3: Inserting/removing instruments, devices, fingers/hands. Standard 4: Administering fluids/medications via IV, ID, IM, and SC routes. Standard 6: Administering blood and blood products. Standard 7: Administering medications containing blood products. Standard 8: Dispensing medications. Standard 17: Administering medications via CVC, PICC, and IVAD. Standard 18: Administering TPN.
Preferred Qualifications:Recent inpatient surgical acute care experience within the last two years is strongly preferred. Experience caring for patients across more than one inpatient surgical unit. Preference will be given to applicants with current or previous experience in the RAH Surgery Float Pool. Experience working within the CoACT collaborative care framework. Demonstrated interest in expanding surgical knowledge and progressively developing the ability to practice across multiple units.
