The Short Stay Surgical Unit (SSSU) provides nursing care to same day and short stay surgery patients. Our patient demographic is from infants to 17 years with a variety of surgical procedures and some medical conditions. As the LPN you will be responsible for providing patient care using the nursing process in a fast paced and dynamic environment. You will be expected to display leadership through preceptoring, mentoring and orientating new staff and/or students to the SSSU. In addition, you will demonstrate excellence in patient and family centered care, patient advocacy and teaching; a collaborative team-based approach; conflict resolution, critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills; and a commitment to fostering an environment of respect, promoting the values of AHS. This is a fast-paced non-sedentary unit which will require nursing ability to lift, push, pull, stand and have dexterity of movement (supporting, carrying, holding).

As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Pediatric Surgical Unit experience in an acute facility – OR Day Surgery experience (preference given to those with pediatric day surgery experience). OR Surgical Unit experience. Minimum 1-year exp in past 2 years.

Preferred Qualifications:

AHS Competencies up to date + IV push medications / IV medication administration; CVC care; PCA & Syringe pump experience; Blood Glucose; Cast cutting; Care of -Tracheostomy; Epidural; and Chest Tubes. Experience as a preceptor and/or orientating new staff. Inpatient and Day Surgery Connect Care training. PEARS, PALS, or other specify. Demonstrated professional development. Working with site initiatives, leadership courses, IV starts.
