Your Opportunity:
Unit 43 is an Acute General Medical and Medical/Psychiatric Inpatient Unit at the Peter Lougheed Centre. The medical/psychiatry service is unique to the PLC and provides a multi-disciplinary integrated approach to the treatment of patients with concurrent medical and psychiatric illnesses to better address the needs of this population. As an LPN on our unit, you will have an opportunity to strengthen knowledge and skills while practicing to full scope of practice. The LPN on Unit 43 is expected to actively participate in quality improvement initiatives set out by the unit quality council. You will be required to care for patients who at times can become agitated, aggressive and unpredictable. You must be able to de-escalate patients and respond appropriately. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate: decision making, critical thinking, organization and conflict resolution skills; interpersonal and communication skills; build and maintain relationships with patients, families and the interdisciplinary team; patient teaching, advocacy and patient and family centered care; show initiative and independence; be adaptable and flexible in a changing environment; and foster positive relationships in a team environment. Other unit specific duties include collaboration of care with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Health Care Aide (HCA) and other members of the multidisciplinary team. As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team, utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, and demonstrated skill level, in alignment with applicable legislation, standards of practice, policies, and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Currently working as an LPN on an inpatient medical unit in an urban acute care setting in the Calgary Zone with at least 1 year of experience. Demonstrated ability to work with a large multi-disciplinary team. Strong communication skills essential. Demonstrated ability to work at full scope of practice. Physical ability to push, lift and carry upwards of 30lbs required. Must be physically able to walk, stand, bend and sit for the majority of a 11.08-hour shift. Must be able to provide assistance to patients with mobility issues.
Preferred Qualifications:Experience working with patients with complex behaviours, dementia, addiction and mental health conditions. Experience on med/psych unit preferred. Med/psych training preferred. “See the Person” course. NVCI certification (within the last 2 years). Current N95 Fit Test and "It's Your Move" certifications. Experience working in a CoACT environment preferred. Experience using Connect Care preferred.
