Your Opportunity:

Under the direction of the Outpatient Department Manager, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) would be responsible for direct nursing care to our oncology patients in an ambulatory care setting. Outpatient Oncology Clinics: The LPN integrates and applies knowledge of cancer pathophysiology, disease progression, and symptom problems to assess and evaluate the outcomes of best practice and evidence-based care and other clinical interventions. Works collaboratively with other members of the health care team, supporting patients with the highest standards of care that are congruent with the standards of the Nursing Department and the Oncology nursing practices issued by CANO. Supports clinical research. The LPN must possess the knowledge to: Identify and assess the physical, psychological, sociological, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Facilitates referrals to other disciplines as required for further assessment and treatment. Recognizes situations of priority and/or emergency including those unique to cancer therapies and oncologic emergencies. Prioritizes to ensure that emergency situations are dealt with quickly and efficiently. Applies oncology knowledge and technical skills for patient assessment. Utilizes a comprehensive approach based on nursing assessment to establish, document, and revise nursing care to meet individual patient needs specific to the Oncology patient and their treatment modalities. Prioritizes nursing actions for teaching, counseling, supporting, informing, and providing care to the patient and family. Education: Attains required and recommended certifications and maintains re-certification. Participates in staff and/or patient education. Assumes responsibility for own professional education. Acts as preceptor to nursing students as required.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Previous experience caring for patients undergoing chemotherapy, biotherapy and radiation therapy is required, however experience in high acute areas will be considered. Knowledge in Theoretical Principles of Chemotherapy Administration is an asset. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team is essential. Demonstrated assessment and critical thinking skills is essential. Ability to organize and prioritize work in a fast-paced environment is essential. Due to the acuity of our patient population, must be able to assist patients with varying degrees of mobility. Ability to withstand physical demands of lifting, pulling, pushing, transferring, and transporting patients. Also, ability to stand for long periods of time and bending is required. Demonstrated ability to prioritize in a rapidly changing environment. Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and independence of nursing practice in a multidisciplinary team environment.
