In this position, you’ll work closely with the General Counsel to provide clear, practical advice on corporate, commercial, privacy, and health law matters that influence how continuing care services are delivered. You’ll take on complex files that require sound judgment, thoughtful risk assessment, and the ability to translate legal requirements into workable guidance for operational teams and senior leaders. You’ll also support the ALA Board Office, contributing to governance practices that promote transparency, accountability, and effective decision‑making. Description:

The Legal Counsel provides broad‑based legal support across Assisted Living Alberta, delivering independent, solutions‑focused advice on corporate, commercial, privacy, and health law matters. The role manages complex and time‑sensitive files, identifies legal risks, and communicates clear guidance on rights, obligations, and liabilities to operational teams, corporate services, and senior leadership. Key responsibilities include drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts; supporting procurement processes; advising on compliance with the Continuing Care Act, Health Information Act, Access to Information and Protection of Privacy legislation, and related regulations; and contributing to organizational risk‑management initiatives. The position also provides dedicated support to the ALA Board Office by preparing and reviewing Board and Committee materials, advising on governance matters, and assisting with the development and maintenance of governance documents, policies, and procedures.

Required Qualifications:

Law Degree (JD) from an accredited university in Canada. Licensed to practice law in Alberta and a member of good standing with the Law Society of Alberta. Minimum of 4 years post-call legal practice with a corporate and governance focus; Strong background and proven experience providing legal advice in at least four of the following areas: contracting, procurement, data and privacy, technology and innovation, health, research, administrative and regulatory, insurance, and Indigenous law.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience providing corporate governance support; Experience handling complex corporate or commercial agreements.


Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a healthcare organization; Experience working with government ministries; Experience collaborating with Senior and Executive Leadership; Understanding of the refocused health system; Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with senior management; Strong negotiation and legal drafting skills.
