Your Opportunity:

The Instructor - Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) for Inpatient Addiction and Mental Health (AMH) will be responsible to educate and coach team members to promote the development and sustainability of clinical best practices, achieve comprehensive care plans, assist in implementation of evidence-based practice and critically assess, evaluate, anticipate and address risks to patients and staff safety. The CNE will communicate and foster inter-professional teamwork, patient-centered care, and innovation. The CNE will possess advanced skill, knowledge, and experience in AMH nursing, as well as the Calgary Zone medical capabilities initiative, with an ability to educate and mentor staff. Strong understanding of professional standards of practice and knowledge of the AMH continuum of care is crucial. The CNE will be expected to work independently or collaboratively with other CNEs within the zone and be involved in program development and planning to deliver quality care to patients and families. The CNE is expected to have the ability to assist staff to reflect on their practice in an approachable manner with positive and effective feedback, making improvements toward best practice. The CNE is expected to be a leader in developing best practices and can assess and support the learning requirements for AMH nurses. The CNE will be responsible for delivering and maintaining an orientation program and advanced learning needs for the team. Through clinical leadership, mentoring, & coaching, the CNE supports high quality, safe patient care that promotes a positive patient experience. Must possess strong adaptability & organizational skills with the ability to plan short- and long-term initiatives, & projects. Demonstrated analytical, planning, teaching, conflict management & decision-making skills. The CNE will support other AMH services at FMC, not limited to rTMS, ECT, and PES.

Description:

As an Instructor, you will be an expert practitioner and key educator in support of both nursing staff and the multi-disciplinary clinical team. You will take a leadership role in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of education for nursing staff including orientation, compulsory and continuing education, and clinical development. You will collaborate with management and internal partners to promote standards of clinical, educational and evidence informed practice. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum (5) years' experience working adult acute care mental health over the past 5-8 years. Relevant teaching and leadership skills required. Prior experience as a Clinical Nurse Educator. Knowledgeable and experienced in AMH processes, evidence-based psychosocial interventions, including group therapy, as well as complex care planning, documentation, record management, HPA restricted activities, Mental Health Act, MSE, suicide risk assessment, current applicable policy and legislation required. Proficient computer skills (including PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel and Word). Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment. Must have proven skills and experience in medical assessment and crisis intervention. Additionally, must have familiarity of the expectations of medical capabilities within mental health and be able to provide treatment guidance, assess potential difficulties, and respond to medical emergencies. Skill/knowledge of adult learning principles. Strong working knowledge/experience of aggression de-escalation techniques. Ability to teach staff violence risk assessment and emergency response. Ability to lead/support debrief following an incident required. Strong working knowledge of physical/systems assessment. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. Preferred Qualifications:

Awareness of Calgary Zone AMH programs, resources, and practices is an asset. Preference will be given to applicants who are eSIM trained and has instructors’ certification in NVCI. Previous experience with leadership/quality/process improvement initiatives or committees. Ability to assess learning needs of staff to support practice and ongoing development on a multidisciplinary team.
