Alberta Health Services (AHS) is looking for a highly motivated individual for the position of Cook I that is dedicated to both high-quality work and customer service. This Regular Part-Time position is located at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. This position appeals to a candidate with interest in a room service model of meal preparation and delivery, accustomed to providing customized, individual meals on demand. As a Cook I within the Patient Food Services department, you will directly impact patient care by providing nutritious, healthy, high-quality meals. You will be accountable for performing various tasks under minimal supervision while using strong customer service, teamwork, organizational and leadership skills to: Prepare and serve high quality food following standardized recipes, menu documents and AHS policies. Assist and/or manage inventory and ordering of supplies. Safely operate and clean food service equipment. Comply with all AHS safety and sanitation policies. Provide mentorship within the department, as required. Provide support to employees during meal preparation, plating and assembly. Complete other food service duties as assigned. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable with on-demand meal production used in hotels and restaurants and specialized therapeutic diets and be accountable for performing a variety of tasks to ensure quality patient meal experience. The candidate will use strong customer service skills, teamwork and organizational skills to prepare, portion and assemble food in a fast-paced, on-demand environment with speed and accuracy; work under pressure in high stress situations; communicate effectively with patients, co-workers, and other departments; effective, professional team member; demonstrate a patient first approach; perform basic math functions to measure out food portions.
Description:
As a Cook I, you will be responsible for food preparation, portion and assembly, and serving of menu items with limited supervision. Your typical duties may include preparing multi-ingredient recipes from raw ingredients using various cooking techniques and established recipes, preparing meals using precooked products utilizing various re-thermalization techniques and ensuring meals are appropriately portioned. You will follow AHS guidelines for quantity and quality controls, food safety standards, and established cleaning and sanitization practices to ensure the cleanliness of cooking equipment and work areas.

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Physically capable to lift food, supplies and equipment up to 46lbs and must be able to push/pull meal carts up to 250lbs. This position requires you to walk and stand on your feet for the duration of your shift. Food Sanitation and Hygiene Certificate or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Journeyperson Cook required. Demonstrated customer service experience and training required. Minimum of 3 years’ work-related experience in commercial food service or restaurant cooking required. Basic knowledge of computer applications is required. Cost control experience is required. All new employees must be able to attend a 2-day Patient Food Service New Employee Orientation followed by an onsite orientation shift. Preferred Qualifications:Red Seal endorsement is preferred. Two years' experience with health care food service preferred. Texture modification food preparation training preferred. WHMIS training is preferred. Workplace Health and Safety Training preferred.
