Your Opportunity:

Are you passionate about health care quality improvement? Are you looking for an opportunity to use your QI expertise to address resource utilization, communication, best practice knowledge translation, physician wellness, and workflow efficiency? Are you familiar with Hospitalist physician workflows and the patient populations they support? The Calgary Hospitalist Program is seeking a self-driven, talented QI Consultant who will be an integral member of the team, helping to identify, design, implement, and evaluate physician-led QI initiatives in a variety of settings, including acute care, rehab, and continuing care settings across Calgary. This position is based at Foothills Medical Centre and is a hybrid remote and on-site role, with occasional travel to the Peter Lougheed Centre, South Health Campus, and community Carewest/AgeCare sites to support physician driven quality improvement project work.

Description:

In collaboration with the QI physician leads, the Hospitalist QI Consultant plays a significant role in the planning of QI initiatives, including developing project charters, making recommendations for project design, conducting literature searches, coordinating submission of ethics approval applications, assisting with project implementation, analyzing relevant data, and creating project reports and associated communications. Where appropriate, the QI Consultant engages with the broader group of Hospitalists, operational leadership, site-level quality councils, and external partners on behalf of the Hospitalists' QI committees and may present project findings to internal and external audiences. Strong project management and organizational skills, including the ability to plan, coordinate, and manage project concurrently.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare discipline, quality improvement, or a related field. Formal training in QI methodology, e.g. AHS Improvement Way Fundamentals Plus, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) courses/certificate, or equivalent. At least two (2) years' experience in planning, implementing, and managing quality improvement initiatives. Demonstrated skills in fundamental QI tools (PDSA, root cause analysis, etc.) and basic understanding of change management principles e.g., ADKAR. Knowledge and/or experience in data analysis and visualization, process mapping, run charts, statistical process control charts, other statistical tools. Minimum 5 years of clinical experience working on an inpatient medical unit, with experience supporting Hospitalist physicians and caring for Hospitalist patient populations. Able to collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams across multiple disciplines. Data analysis skills, including the ability to independently extract, analyze, and synthesize data and create Connect Care reports, with knowledge of the inpatient Connect Care charting platform to support quality improvement and operational initiatives.


Additional Required Qualifications:

High proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint. Skills/experience in designing and delivering informational materials, e.g. posters, presentations. Working knowledge of Alberta Health Services Knowledge & Reporting Services and Data & Analytics teams, with experience collaborating with analysts to support reporting, data extraction, and quality improvement initiatives. Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead and facilitate discussions with physicians, clinical teams, and stakeholders. Experience conducting literature reviews, critically appraising research, and staying current with emerging evidence, quality improvement data, and best practices across Hospitalist programs in Alberta and Canada. Ability to identify, evaluate, and support physician driven quality improvement and educational opportunities to advance clinical practice and system improvement. Ability to present project and quality improvement initiatives at local, provincial, and national conferences as opportunities arise. Familiarity with community Hospitalist sites such as long-term care and RCTP facilities, including an understanding of Hospitalist physician roles and workflows in these settings. Experience applying ethics screening tools, including the ARECCI framework, to quality improvement and project work.


Preferred Qualifications:

AHS Improvement Way Greenbelt or equivalent. Formal project management training. Masters in relevant area (healthcare quality, nursing, leadership, etc.). Experience in REDCap survey creation, Connect Care, Tableau reporting, creating process maps. Calgary Hospitalists experience and an understanding of their patient profile. Experience in Nurse Clinician, Nurse Educator or similar non-nursing role.
