The Palliative & End-of-Life Care Program is recruiting an energetic and adaptable Assistant Head Nurse, Palliative Care Consultant who can manage a specialty clinical workload autonomously. The ideal candidate would be a motivated, self-starting, and proactive individual who is committed to lifelong learning and excellent service delivery in the PEOL program. The successful incumbent will be part of the Palliative Community Consult Team (PCCT). You will work alongside a specialized team of palliative physicians, NPS, & other palliative nurse consultants to address referrals related to PEOL symptoms that are difficult to manage, complex family issues related to patients’ illnesses, disease comprehension discussions, complex GCD & ACP discussions, and Type C Continuing Care Home (hospice) assessments. You will work with system collaborators by assessing patients in their private residence, those residing in Type A/B/C Continuing Care Homes, & those as in-patients in Zone suburban/rural community hospitals. This work involves working with clinical partners in care: primary care providers, the Cross Cancer Institute, home care teams, Continuing Care, and acute care teams. You will work in an office setting, as well, will travel within established geographical networks of care in the AHS Edmonton Zone. Your day-to-day work changes based on the location of the patients

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:3-5 years of recent (within the last year) experience in a palliative care setting as a clinician. Strong to expert knowledge of PEOL symptom management modalities (pharmacological & non-pharmacological) & the psychosocial support often required for someone diagnosed with a life-limiting/life-threatening illness. Consistent, proven, & demonstrated experience with managing & working on multiple competing priorities, requiring fast action & at times re-prioritization. Evidence to support the ability & skill level to work to the CRNA full scope of RN clinical practice: accesses & utilizes resources available & integrates them into scope related clinical expertise to make informed decisions about patient care in alignment with patients’ GCD, individual preferences & wishes. Communication (written, verbal, non-verbal): highly skilled & effective to write accurate, clear, concise, timely, & relevant consulting notes; to communicate with a large scope of system collaborators, & with patients & their caregivers during times of distress and urgency. Valid driver’s license. Ability to travel throughout the AHS Edmonton Zone/corridor year-round.
Preferred Qualifications:CNA Certification in National Nursing Specialty (Gerontological, Critical Care, Nursing, Hospice, Palliative Care Nursing). Connect Care experience. Master’s degree in nursing. LEAP Core and In-Depth. Knowledge of care delivery in the community, as well as education and research experience preferred. Demonstrated initiative, leadership, problem solving and interpersonal skills including public speaking.
