Assistant Head Nurse – DTC Surgical Suite

As a member of a multi disciplinary team, the Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. The AHN assumes responsibility and acts as a resource for staff skill assessment and development. The AHN will provide leadership in clinical practice through coordination and monitoring of clinical activities, management of equipment, supplies and patient flow through the surgical suite. The AHN is in a leadership role and must demonstrate a professional, positive attitude, excellent communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills. The AHN is a role model and leader within the department and will be responsible for a surgical service or services within the department. The ability to be flexible and fluid, working in a variety of surgical services as a leader is an asset. The AHN contributes to quality initiatives and promotes a professional work environment at all times. The Diagnostic Treatment Center (DTC) Operating Room is comprised of 13 theatres. We perform general surgery, neurological, orthopedic, trauma, plastic, maxillofacial, urology, thoracic and vascular procedures. 5 theatres are digitally integrated for performing minimally invasive surgery. We do over 11,000 surgeries a year, most of which are of the high intensity, inpatient variety.
Description:
As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Minimum of 3 years current operating room experience in a high acuity OR Previous experience as an Assistant Head Nurse or Team Leader. Recent experience in a charge nurse/ leadership role. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of an integrated team. Ability to demonstrate advanced problem solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. Ability to demonstrate communications skills that promote respect and a positive team environment. Incumbent should have effective interpersonal and written communication skills. Computer skills including experience in Microsoft Outlook, email and scheduling
Preferred Qualifications:Baccalaureate in Nursing. Knowledge of advanced minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, multi-traumas involving orthopedic, abdominal and thoracic surgery. Peri-operative Certificate. Canadian Nursing Association (CNA) Certification in Peri-operative Nursing. Only candidates who submit a current resume will be considered for an interview.
