Anesthesia Assistant
Your Opportunity:
Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH) Operating Room is running efficiently with four active ORs daily and a strong multidisciplinary team. Key Responsibilities: Assist anesthetists with airway management, including intubation support and troubleshooting. Set up, operate, and monitor anesthesia ventilators and other respiratory equipment. Perform pre-operative respiratory assessments as needed. Monitor and manage intraoperative ventilation parameters under the direction of the anesthetist. Ensure all respiratory equipment is maintained, calibrated, and ready for use. Respond to respiratory emergencies in the OR and provide immediate support. Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure seamless patient care transitions. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education related to anesthesia and respiratory care. The Anesthesia Assistant (AA) collaborates closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, and other perioperative staff to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care. This role requires advanced knowledge of anesthesia pharmacology, physiology, and equipment, as well as the ability to respond effectively in high-pressure clinical environments.

As an Anesthesia Assistant, you will work under the direction of licensed anesthesiologists (specialist physicians) and as part of the anesthesia care team to design and implement anesthesia care plans. You will use your knowledge, clinical inquiry, and assessment skills to guide complex clinical decisions in time-sensitive situations.

Successful completion of an accredited post-graduate Anesthesia Assistant Program. Active registration with the applicable regulatory body. Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) membership with Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant (CCAA) designation.
Additional Required Qualifications:Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with current licensure in Alberta. Must successfully complete the Anesthesia Assistant registry examination within six months of hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required. Strong understanding of anesthesia machines, ventilators, and airway management techniques. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
Preferred Qualifications:Minimum 2 years’ clinical experience, ideally in critical care or anesthesia. Strong communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills. Able to work accurately under pressure in a fast-paced OR. Maintains professionalism and integrity. Proactive, organized, and responsive to team and patient needs.
