Your Opportunity:
As an Anesthesia Care Team-Respiratory Therapist III (RT III), you will report to the Program Manager for Operative Services at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. This multisite position will be based out of the Misericordia and Grey Nuns Hospitals with the potential to provide service at other facilities. Under the direction and supervision (direct or indirect) of an Anesthesiologist, the RT III works as a member of the anesthetic care team (ACT). The RT III develops, implements, and evaluates an anesthesia care plan in collaboration with the Anesthesiologist optimized to individual patient needs. The RT III participates in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases of care in accordance with Covenant Health’s mission, vision, and values. Daily work will include: assisting with the delivery of general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia care; administering various anesthetics, medical gases, medications, blood and blood products and various crystalloid or colloid solutions; assembling, operating and monitoring anesthetic gas machines; invasive and non-invasive monitoring techniques, interprets results, and evaluates patient’s response to interventions; application of ultrasound as required for line placement, nerve block placement, or clinical assessment; managing mechanical ventilation including mode, adjunct and oxygen changes, internal transport of ventilated and/or anesthetized patients; blood tests and interpretation; oxygen therapies; airway management; accurate, complete, clear and concise clinical documentation; effective communication with the entire surgical team; early recognition of critical events and initiation of supportive and corrective action. The incumbent in this role will be required to complete additional ACT education modules (pre-requisites for upcoming Anesthesia Assistant Certification).

The Respiratory Therapist III (Anaesthesia) works under the direction/supervision of an anesthesiologist as a member of the anesthetic care team (ACT) developing, implementing, evaluating, monitoring an anesthetic care plan for individual patients; participating in pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative phases of care. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the HSAA Paramedical Professional/Technical Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications: Graduate of a recognized and accredited school of Respiratory Therapy program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration and member in good standing with the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta (CARTA) required. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support required.
Additional Required Qualifications:Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification. Eligible for Anesthetic Assistant membership with the Canadian Anesthesiologists Society (CAS). Knowledge of the principles of anesthesia (both regional and general), anesthesia pharmacology, anesthesia. equipment, airway management, invasive and non-invasive physiological monitoring, principles of asepsis and sterile technique, post-anesthesia care, pain management, and special considerations in anesthesia. Must have good organizational skills. Must be able to manage multiple competing priorities through the utilization of critical thinking, delegation, and prioritization skills. Must be able to communicate effectively and work well within a team. Must be able to respond and manage challenging, stressful situations in a calm, clear manner.
Preferred Qualifications:Two (2) years recent, related operating room experience preferred. Completion of an accredited post-graduate Anesthetic Assistant Program preferred. CSRT membership with CCAA designation considered an asset.
