Your Opportunity:

The Clinical Supervisor, Microbiology, North Hub is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and providing leadership for all people-management activities within their assigned areas. Reporting to the Manager, Microbiology, North Hub, the Supervisor supports the development and implementation of project plans, operational initiatives, and approved process improvements. This position oversees the Edmonton Base Lab microbiology department, including bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, and molecular diagnostics. The Clinical Supervisor supports the vision, mission, and strategic priorities of Alberta Public Laboratories (APL) and fosters strong collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including leaders within APL, Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health, and Alberta Health. Key responsibilities include recruitment and succession planning, staff development, performance management, change leadership, collective agreement interpretation, financial stewardship, and strategic planning. Working closely with the Manager, the Supervisor contributes to quality and patient safety initiatives while ensuring operational excellence across the site. In addition, the Clinical Supervisor is accountable for maintaining quality standards, overseeing staff training and competency programs, assessing resource requirements to meet changing testing demands, and optimizing laboratory operations. The Supervisor also collaborates with internal and external laboratory leaders across the network to maximize resources, share best practices, and address common operational challenges.

Description:

The Clinical Supervisor oversees orientation and onboarding for new staff, including technical training, safety requirements, and organizational processes. The role promotes a positive, high-performing work environment through staff engagement, coaching, performance management, recognition, and corrective action as required. The Supervisor participates in disciplinary processes, grievance management, and workplace investigations. The Supervisor ensures staff understand organizational policies, procedures, expectations, and operational priorities, and works with leadership to monitor and document mandatory training requirements. This position applies advanced problem-solving skills to address operational, technical, and clinical issues, identifying trends, monitoring performance indicators, and implementing standardized practices that support quality improvement. The Supervisor is accountable for ensuring safety policies, procedures, and equipment requirements are consistently followed. In partnership with Laboratory Management, the Supervisor contributes to the development and implementation of operational strategies, policies, and programs that support high-quality patient care. The role supports workforce development through teaching, coaching, mentoring, and succession planning. Through collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, the Clinical Supervisor advances laboratory initiatives and organizational priorities. The position supports strategic objectives, promotes a culture of excellence and accountability, and monitors departmental resources. Operational effectiveness, performance, and productivity are evaluated through the analysis of reports, performance metrics, and non-conforming event data, with corrective actions implemented as required.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a recognized diploma or degree program in a laboratory healthcare discipline, such as Medical Laboratory Technology, Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology, or Medical Laboratory Assisting. Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive leadership experience in a healthcare or laboratory environment, including direct responsibility for staff supervision, performance management, scheduling, coaching, and operational oversight. Experience in specialized microbiology, molecular testing, quality accreditation, audit preparation, and HPTA compliance.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through the delivery of presentations, facilitation of meetings, preparation of reports, and effective communication with diverse stakeholder groups. Experience using performance metrics, quality indicators, or operational data to identify opportunities for improvement, implement corrective actions, and monitor outcomes.


Preferred Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program and active or eligible registration with the CMLTA. Demonstrated leadership experience in change management, conflict resolution, staff development, coaching, and performance management. Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and build collaborative relationships with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
