Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Pathologists’ Assistant II, Supervisor or Manager. The Pathologists’ Assistant I is directly responsible to pathologists for the quality of their work and will work in close collaboration with and under the guidance of pathologist medical staff in all matters relating to tissue examination. Dissects, describes, and document all pertinent information of surgical tissues to create succinct, detailed, thorough, and accurate reports required by Pathologist staff to complete complex protocols for proper pathological staging/diagnosis. Accurately handles all levels of specimen complexity from biopsy to complex, multi-organ, enbloc resections. Review’s patient clinical information (surgical reports, imaging, pathology, and oncology history) to properly assess, and handles all tissue specimens efficiently with attention to individual clinical circumstances and requirements. Ensures specimens are handled properly following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); modifying dissection, documentation, and sampling of specimens as required given broad range of clinical, anatomical, and pathological variation. Maintain current knowledge of frequently changing cancer staging and synoptics, as it relates to gross dissection and specimen handling. Responsible for tumor banking, ancillary testing, frozen sections, lymphoma protocol, EUS, immunofluorescence, cytogenetic studies, flow cytometry. Provide assistance to the Pathologists and Pathology Residents during the performance of gross examination of specimens in the routine service work. Perform quality control and quality assurance practices and maintain records as required. Participate in the training and orientation of residents, students, and new staff. Provide feedback towards evaluation. Maintain professional and ethical responsibility to protect privacy. Other related duties as required.

As a Pathologists' Assistant I, you will perform gross examination (describe, dissect and document) specimens from biopsy and surgical procedures, selecting sections for processing. You will work in close collaboration with and under the supervision of pathologist medical staff in all matters relating to tissue examination, dissection, and staff/resident training and evaluation. You will assist Pathologists or Residents in the performance of Hospital-ordered autopsies, including receiving and preparing remains.

Master's Degree of Pathologists' Assistant or equivalent combination of education and experience recognized by the Canadian Association of Pathologists for Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistant (CCCPA) certification. Active or eligible for certification with the Canadian Certification Council of Pathologists' Assistants (CCCPA).
Additional Required Qualifications:Heavy lifting up to 25lbs, capable of standing or walking for long periods. Able to work with and exposure to chemicals and gloves. Any Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA score of Benchmark 8 completed within the last six months. Physical effort requiring manual dexterity is required (i.e. more than 75% of time on the job).
Preferred Qualifications:Grossing experience in Anatomic Pathology within the last 2 years. Basic LIS and Microsoft computer skills. Basic understanding of CPSA Accreditation requirements. Experience using autoembedding cassettes for grossing.
