Your Opportunity:

The consequential vacancy process may be used to fill any resulting vacancies. Genetics & Genomics (G&G), as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of inherited conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services for the province of Alberta. The Laboratory Technologist I will work within the Calgary-zone Biochemical Genetics Lab to contribute to providing diagnostic testing for all patients suspected of having an inherited metabolic disease (including screen positive newborns in Southern Alberta), ongoing therapeutic monitoring of patients with previously-diagnosed inherited diseases, and overall supporting the clinical service provided by the Alberta Children’s Hospital Inherited Metabolic Disorders Clinic, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Metabolic Genetics Clinic, as well as other specialty clinics. As a Laboratory Technologist I, you will perform patient testing using various analytical platforms/techniques including GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, amino acid analyzer, fluorimeter and spectrophotometer/plate reader as well as various qualitative methods (e.g., colorimetric, TLC, electrophoresis), contributing to the targeted investigation of inherited disorders of amino acid, organic acid, fatty acid, carbohydrate, and organellar (i.e., peroxisomal, lysosomal, mitochondrial) metabolism. Other key responsibilities include (but are not limited to): Generating, compiling, and verifying data for interpretation by laboratory geneticists, learning and maintaining existing equipment, participating in troubleshooting of equipment and procedures, participating in quality assurance testing, learning and complying with all safety requirements and quality practices, and providing coverage for accessioning and preparation of patient samples for testing (as required).

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) I, you will be responsible for the daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples within the laboratory department. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures in the processing of specimens used in diagnosis, treatment and research.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum of two years of recent chemistry laboratory experience with significant exposure to special biochemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, or other specialty laboratory testing. Proof of demonstrable experience with analytical laboratory equipment (e.g., GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, HPLC/UPLC) and performing lower volume, complex/manual assays. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office-based software applications including Excel. Attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and consistency in preparing and generating patient-relevant results from analytical testing. Fluency in the English language (reading, writing, and verbal). Demonstrated qualities of self-motivation and personal initiative. Demonstrated ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and take responsibility for all assigned duties. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

BSc degree in biochemistry, chemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, or medical laboratory sciences preferred. Additional foundations (e.g. academic, research, continuing education) in analytical chemistry, enzymology, metabolism, and/or genetics would be beneficial. Experience with EPIC lab information system is an asset.
