Your Opportunity:

In collaboration with the FMC Pre/Post Analytics Team Leaders, the Laboratory Asst II (MLAII) provides leadership and support during night shift operations in the Pre-Analytics area. This role is essential to maintaining continuity of service, ensuring that overnight workflows meet departmental performance indicators such as Pre/Post turnaround times and non-conforming event metrics. The MLAII is a key resource for guiding and supporting night staff, fostering a respectful and efficient work environment, and ensuring adherence to established protocols. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: providing leadership, coaching, and feedback to Pre-Analytics staff; supporting the supervisor with performance evaluations; training and orienting new staff; contributing to process improvement initiatives and privacy education; acting as a resource for routine and complex requests; managing report and mail distribution; coordinating coverage for absences to maintain adequate staffing; overseeing timekeeping; applying infection control, safety, TDG, WHMIS, and accreditation standards; maintaining inventory of working supplies; assisting in validation and assessment of procedures; participating in meetings as required; and performing duties of an MLAI and Administrative Support II. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, adaptability, and strong communication skills to support the unique demands of night shift operations.

Description:

As a Laboratory Assistant II, you will perform advanced preanalytical or analytical techniques on specimen/samples or coordinate, prioritize, monitor, and assign duties of laboratory staff in your assigned area. You will resolve escalated issues, conduct quality control investigations and maintain technical and operational procedures. You will be responsible for ensuring laboratory staff maintain compliance with policies and procedures and will provide coaching and feedback to staff and students.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 2 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant, with recent inpatient phlebotomy and data entry experience in a large, complex, and diverse healthcare organization within the past year. Demonstrates excellent reliability, accuracy, productivity, and quality of work in alignment with established policies, procedures, and performance standards. Proven ability to work independently and cooperatively within a large team, promoting a respectful and collaborative environment. Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills. Able to maintain composure in challenging situations, comprehend complex information, and respond effectively to meet service goals. Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrates accountability and personal leadership through mentoring, process improvement, and change management. Experience interpreting workflow visuals and responding appropriately to meet turnaround times. Advanced user and troubleshooting knowledge of EPIC (including Hyperspace and Rover), with proven proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel. Ability to troubleshoot technology devices. Must meet English language proficiency requirements (Canadian equivalency to English 30 or 33 or CLBA Benchmark 8 within the last six months).

Preferred Qualifications:

Recent experience in a Calgary hospital PreAnalytics department preferred. Previous leadership or supervisory experience. Active involvement in departmental committees. Experience with quality control, accreditation, safety designation, and hand hygiene auditing. Skilled in training, competency assessment, and interpreting workflow visuals. Professional development in process improvement, change management, and leading self through change.
