Didsbury hospital is located in the quaint community of Didsbury, Alberta. With a population of approximately 5,300 residents in town and thousands more in the surrounding Mountain View County. The hospital provides services to a multitude of patients. Located approximately 83 kilometers north of Calgary and only a 90 minute drive to the Rocky Mountains this community offers rural living with opportunities to enjoy the city or the mountain lifestyle. We are actively seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant with experience and knowledge of policies and procedures to join our dynamic team in providing the highest level of service to our clients. As a member of the interdisciplinary team this position is responsible for working all shifts as assigned by the site Senior Technologist. Specifically, this position collects specimens, performs sample handling and manipulation, performs urinalysis and urine microscopic testing, ECGs, and reports results within the scope of practice of a Medical Laboratory Assistant. Reporting directly to the on-site senior technologists and the Regional Supervisor, the MLA will be responsible for providing exemplary patient care by applying the regional policies and procedures. The scope of practice is a continuum ranging from basic to highly complex procedures and activities within the laboratory department. This position provides off-site collection services to local long term care facilities, APL vehicle provided. This position works primarily weekdays with potential for weekends in the future. In accordance with Health Information Act (HIA), Freedom of Information and Privacy (FOIP) and other privacy legislation in effect the incumbent shall comply at all times with APL / AHS’s Information Privacy and Information Security policies.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Recent training within the last 2 years related to clinical laboratory required. Recent training and experience in urinalysis, including microscopic within the last 2 years. Experience performing phlebotomy in a variety of settings including outpatient laboratory, long term care, emergency and acute care required. Proven ability to work in a computer-based environment using programs such as Microsoft Office (teams, excel, word etc.) as well as various lab-based programs (Spectre, Unity Real time, connect care etc). Knowledge of medical laboratory safety procedures. Knowledge and experience with specimen handling and processing following acceptance and rejection criteria.

Preferred Qualifications:

Connect Care Medical Lab assistance with collections training. Connect Care Cardiac Monitor Badge training. Minimum 1 year of experience as an MLA within a rural facility is preferred. Minimum 1 year phlebotomy experience is preferred.
