Your Opportunity:

Under the direction of the Clinical Supervisor and in collaboration with the MLA II and/or departmental MLT II, the Laboratory Assistant I (MLA I) plays an integral role in supporting the delivery of high-quality patient care. This position is responsible for performing a variety of routine laboratory duties in accordance with established standards, policies, and accreditation requirements. Key responsibilities include specimen receiving, sorting and matching specimens to requisitions, accessioning requests into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), specimen distribution and transport, and troubleshooting specimen-related issues. The MLA I may also perform duties associated with the urinalysis and referral testing areas, including macroscopic and microscopic examination, quality maintenance, and report distribution. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Building positive working relationships with laboratory and non-laboratory personnel is an essential component of this role. In addition to core responsibilities, the MLA I may be required to provide support to other laboratory service areas, including Blood Collection Services and the Outpatient Laboratory, based on operational requirements.

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Grade 12 high school diploma and be a graduate of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant program and relevant courses in Urinalysis required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Commitment to providing excellent patient-focused service. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in a fast-paced environment. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Flexibility to support multiple laboratory areas as needed. Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods. Frequent bending, reaching, and moderate lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required. Manual dexterity is essential for handling specimens and performing phlebotomy. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. May be required to work varying shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays, based on operational needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a high-volume laboratory Knowledge and training in EPIC-Beaker. Experience in working shift work
