G&G provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of inherited conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services for the province of Alberta. The Lab Assistant I position will performed standard and specialized procedures in Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics. You will be responsible for performing automated or manual DNA extractions, DNA quantity and quality assessment using the NanoDrop instrument and cell pelleting. Other responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: specimen accessioning, processing, distribution and storage; reagent preparation, responding to inquiries; cleaning, monitoring and preventative maintenance of lab equipment and work areas; maintaining common supplies; updating inventories and data sheets; and participating in training, lab quality and safety requirements.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year technical experience with processing samples, including processing samples using sterile technique. Previous experience with the use and maintenance of general lab equipment including biological safety cabinets, centrifuges and various pipette types. Excellent typing skills and database entry skills (both speed and accuracy). Experience with Microsoft Office Suite of programs. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment. Superior organizational and time management skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize and deliver accurate work under stressful conditions. Demonstrated problem solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year experience using Connect Care EPIC / Beaker clinical information system including accessioning, set-up bench, batching, tracking and container storage. Experience in a Molecular or Genetics lab would be an asset.
