Your Opportunity:
Smoky Lake, a town located one hour north-east of Edmonton near the junction of Highway 28 and 855 has over 1200 residents and has been dubbed the Pumpkin Capital of Alberta. With the Smoky Lake Stampede, Great White North Pumpkin Fair, several boreal forest campsites nearby and other events throughout the year, many are choosing the Smoky Lake region for their weekend activities. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I at the George McDougall Healthcare Centre (Smoky Lake) you will gain experience in inpatient and outpatient collections, specimen handling and processing (including send outs) and performing urinalysis and ECGs. Eligible candidate will be able to cover shifts in Thorhild, Radway, and Vilna.
Description:
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant I, you will provide high quality service to clients of the clinical laboratory in an effective, efficient and safe manner. You will be responsible for a variety of laboratory functions including procurement, handling, processing, dispatching and testing of specimens, performing procedures and reporting results.

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:Equivalency is defined as completion of a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) and/or Combined Laboratory and Xray Technologist (CLXT) program in Canada; completion of a Medical Lab Technician/Technologist program outside of Canada; and/or MLT or CLXT students who have completed their phlebotomy training/rotation. Internal APL Employees who have completed a combination of formal training and/or on-the-job experience directly related to the representative duties and job responsibilities in the MLA I job posting. Applicants with a high school diploma may be considered. Upon hire, you will be required to complete on-the-job phlebotomy training provided by APL at no cost, and formal training courses offered by SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) or NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology). The costs associated with these formal training courses will be your responsibility. You will be required complete these training requirements within six (6) months of hire, as per the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA) collective agreement.
Preferred Qualifications:Medical laboratory assistant (or equivalent) experience in a hospital setting. Experience performing urinalysis, phlebotomy and ECGs.
